How Much LA-state Affinity Exists Now Compared to the Past?

I don't think it's changed much over the years but has declined some.
As a kid in the 60's/70's I think most kids in LA who were talented enough wanted to play for LSU. There were a few defections then (Norris Weese, Terry Davis, Billy Cannon Jr.).
There seems to be more high-profile defections but some of that is the product of us being able to recruit more nationally and the fact the LA is producing and incredible # of SEC quality recruits.

The growing number of media outlets have provided kids a look into life outside of what they are accustomed. Good or bad, right or wrong sometimes different is all that is needed to provide a desire for change. That being said, I believe it will increase as time goes on.

kids just want to do their own thing sometimes
a talented kid growing up in LA, most people expect him to go to LSU, and that drives some kids away
not every kid growing up in LA has to stay in LA, nor do they owe anything to LSU

There should be a law that states otherwise.

As much as we love all things LSU, there is a vocal minority in the state that despises everything that is LSU. If these types are a family member or close friend, they can negatively affect a kid's thought process during the recruiting stage in terms of becoming a future Tiger.

not even close. even though LSU had more scollies, there wasn't near as much recruiting in new Orleans or north Louisiana. But your premise has some merit as it is not unusual for kids to go out of state anymore (no matter where they are from). with transportation and communication advances, things aren't as localized as they once were.

This may be more troubling to us "older people" than young folks. You grew up purple and gold and dreamed you could run through those goal post dressed in purple and gold. You knew you could graduate and receive a nice offer from a nice company and live happily ever after.
Unfortunately like most things today are not like " the good ole days" and believe me they were better. Crime, drugs, disrespect, abuse etc were almost non existent.
I wish all young people could experience those days

Compared to the 80s and 90s, we're seeing a nice improvement in retaining instate talent in the 2000s.

Oh they are pretty vocal here in NO, I live Uptown and there is plenty of LSU hate. Something you may want to consider before you go to Mannings...

Maybe my sarcasm meter is turned off but when exactly was crime and abuse almost non-existent?

There's a reason no other program can claim that...

The answer is recruiting. Louisiana is one of the country's most talent-dense states, and LSU is the state's only power-conference team. That gives Miles' Tigers maybe the country's most automatic base of elite talent.

That makes sense. Dinardo, Saban and Miles all recruited good here. I think the good thing about Miles is the OOS kids he lands. Especially from Florida and Texas or the "I-10 Corridor" as Miles calls it.

Miles has been fantastic at recruiting. He's one of the best in the nation.

You must have forgotten the kids being poached by Notre Dame, Penn State and others back then.
Think chances are better now for LSU to retain top in-state kids, IMHO.

ND got an LB named Figaro IIRC. Who did PSU poach from LA?

LA kids who played in South Bend
Benny Guilbeaux - Opelousas
Cedric Figaro - Laffy
Michael Stonebreaker - NO
Arnaz Battle- Shreveport
I'm sure there are several others that I can't remember right now

Played with him at Byrd, freak athlete. He liked LSU but really wanted to go out of state.

the best thing that probably happened to AB was breaking his wrist while at ND. He was converted from QB to WR which allowed him to be drafted and play 8-9 seasons in the League.
dude definitely had game
re: recruiting , just a few other big time players from NO who left the State during the LSU down years . I graduated HS in 1986 and knew most of these guys
Tyrone Hughes ... St Aug to NEB , later played for the Saints
Leroy Hoard ... St Aug to Michigan , reminded me of LF7
Chris Wells ... Curtis to tOSU
Reggie Dupard .... Curtis to SMU , likely followed the $$$$
Mickey Joseph ... Shaw to NEB , best option QB I've ever seen play
Harlan "Boo" Davis ... EJ to TENN , FB and track , world class speed
