How does one shoot and kill another hunter thinking he is a deer. I truly have no concept of how this happens. Prayers to the family. Gentlemen please make sure everyone stays safe.

So so so stupid. HOW????

One of the first rules of thumb is to make sure of your target and what us beyond your target. People never cease to amaze me.

Just have a hard time wrapping my mind around that. How in the hell do you aim at a deer not knowing what it is you are shooting.

No hunters orange, not being 100% certain of what your are shooting, etc. stupidity on display. I know the Haynes family. They are good people. What a needless tragedy.

Sad to hear that. I'll never understand how someone can make the mistake of confusing a human for a deer, but then I know someone who was shot by a squirrel hunter while waving his hand from a tree stand. Brush busters are dangerous people to be around while int he woods.

I have an acquaintance that has been missing for over a year now after going hunting by himself last year..

There have been a ton of speculation about what really happened, one thing is for sure, he didn't come out the woods alive

Was walking out from the stand this morning and admittedly I never wear orange. In tall grass almost head high ( I'm short) and the thought crossed my mind that someone could be trespassing and take a shot at a dark object going through the grass.

There was an article in F&S 15 or so years ago about this. There were many stories of guys seeing "deer" that turned out to be someone or something else. It talked about inexperience hunters getting excited and even veterans being too confident in what they were seeing. The mind can sometimes play tricks on you when you want to believe your are seeing a deer.

One story was about a guy hunting a logging road and his buddy was hunting in the same area. Right at last light he saw something walking down the road and was 100% it was a deer in his scope and at the last moment he held off from shooting it, "it" turned out to be his buddy.

This article stuck with me over the years and now I use a light and wear orange no matter where I am hunting.

Back when I was doing taxidermy, I mounted a rainbow trout for a man whose son had killed another hunter during muzzleloader season here. The victim was wearing brown Carrhart coveralls with no blaze orange of any kind. Best I remember, the shooter was never convicted of any crime. It was marked up as an "accident". I didn't agree with that at all. An accident is when a meteor falls out of the sky and hits you in the head. It was carelessness on the shooter and the victim. Victim was survived by his wife and two small kids.

This makes me mad... How in the FKing world do you not verify what you shoot!?! Even if you are hunting brown it's down how do you know where your shot placement is?

Should be charged with 1st degree murder and serve a life sentence..

Damn... I've hunted those woods many times. Sad story.

I know a guy that shot his cousin and killed him, thinking it was a deer... Never had the guts to ask him how this happens though.

It should be impossible. I think when it happens the shooter should see his day in court for both possible murder or gross negligence

Do you read this board? People on here talk all the time about seeing animals that do not exist. People see bear on the side of the interstate. They brush shoot. They get spooked and fire off rounds behind them and into the woods because they KNEW something was stalking them.

It's happened because this guy is an ignorant fricking idiot. This kind of shite used to happen quite often when I was a kid. I know a guy who had the headlight of his four wheeler shot out while driving it at dusk....shooter thought he was a deer.
