Gotcha. I was just trying to point out that I feel abortion is different from this because it affects someone else besides the person making the decision. That's why, while I am against both issues, I feel one should not be legal and the other I dont have an issue with giving someone that choice.

I'm of the opinion that even suffering has a purpose and those that are dying still have something to give. Cutting life short is like cheating. You're not giving or receiving all that you are supposed to.

That's how I feel too. Every day (whether it is a day full of suffering or not) that you wake up is a blessing. And that should be something we cherish and fight for.

Good for her. She took control of the last thing she could, and didn't allow cancer to kill her. She went out like a boss.

And we now have no idea the pain her soul will receive in Hell. I know she was in pain but suicide is suicide. She can't repent and will spend eternity outside of God's grace.

It effects me dearly when a fellow human being dies in a state of mortal sin. I will spend my evening prayers praying for her soul.

I seriously hope none of her family or friends somehow find this thread one day

If you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all but so many try to be cool on this site they say some downright mean and hateful things

Just don't post anything

I would say that is between her and God. I don't think any one of else on this side of Heaven could even make such a claim with 100% certainty.

Amen Jim, too many judgemental closed minded types for my liking.

I didn't say I was turned away from spirituality, just formalised religion. But no point in turning this into a religious debate, I'm happy for the lady being able to end her life the way she chose.

This. No one can know who goes to Hell or not. Suicide may not be considered a "mortal sin" if the person was mentally ill or not thinking clearly. Yes, she seemed to have planned it out thoroughly but she could have been in pain the whole time and was getting desperate. Who knows.

Not trying to be obtuse, but why couldnt this girl just stockpile and OD on pills like so many others choose?

Because most states will prosecute those who assist suicides. The end stages for brain cancer may also prevent you from carrying out your own suicide if you wait too long.

Brain Hospice

I remember seeing a documentary on PBS about people dying from brain cancer. One patient was an old spinster who basically died alone. She seemed at peace, listened to classical music and slept a lot. The entire side of her head was caved in and she had almost no motor control. The second patient was a middle aged man, married with two young children. As the disease progressed, his wife became openly hostile toward him as if everything were his fault. You could see the stress they were under, especially him having to put up with his bitchy wife. I thought at the time I would take the gas pipe in a heartbeat if I had to go thru his ordeal.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches:

quote:

2324 Intentional euthanasia, whatever its forms or motives, is murder. It is gravely contrary to the dignity of the human person and to the respect due to the living God, his Creator.

2277 Whatever its motives and means, direct euthanasia consists in putting an end to the lives of handicapped, sick, or dying persons. It is morally unacceptable.

Thus an act or omission which, of itself or by intention, causes death in order to eliminate suffering constitutes a murder gravely contrary to the dignity of the human person and to the respect due to the living God, his Creator. The error of judgment into which one can fall in good faith does not change the nature of this murderous act, which must always be forbidden and excluded.

Committing murder is a mortal sin, but is forgivable if one is truly sorry and confesses. Committing suicide is murder, but the problem is that you are killing yourself and thus have no means to confess your sins once you are dead. You die having completely turned your back on God. There is no alternative. As I said...I will be praying for her soul. Perhaps it will be granted mercy.
