Wanting a blue butt but really tempted to drive to Tx and get a Red Wattle (Heritage Breed).
I wouldn't waste the time with showing a red wattle because more than likely it won't be a show quality mainly because no one shows red wattles.
Bluebutts are popular but the cross classes will be the most competitive at the show. I'd go with a yorkshire. You can still get a good quality animal that'll show against its own breed.

I'll assume Duroc/Red Wattle are the same thing, atleast it appears that way. Regardless, plenty of people still show them, there's still a Duroc division at the district/state level. Aside from the OPB division it's probably the least competetive.

They look similar to durocs but Red wattles are their own breed.

I would secure that fencing at the bottom of the pen 10x's what you think you need. Raised hogs for about 4 years and almost once a year they'd get out from someone not latching the gate properly to pushing up under the fence. Real fun chasing pigs around the yard .
I would also make sure the area drains well. My pen was covered, but the front was open. Had a raised wooden deck in the back. One year a waterline busted the front became a mud pit. Rain coming though the front kept it a mud pit all season. One pig came out awesome because the mud pit was a workout and kept it toned. The other didn't make weight because it couldn't keep it on having to trod through that mud.

That pen doesn't look half bad, especially for a tame pig. I wouldn't put no wild piney woods rooter in there though...
You had the room. I would have made the pen bigger so it has more room to roam, and the floor doesn't become a big shite/mud hole quickly.

It's built up with about 8 yards of sand and with rain the sand just gets compact. Hoping that keeps from it becoming a mud hole.
I'm hoping to find a pig next week so I'll have this weekend to finish securing it a little more

What time is Randy's Sale on Saturday? I'm right around the corner from him.

8am I think. Really trying to find somewhere else to get one. Don't wanna pay auction price the first year

Serious question but what are you looking to spend? Some of these guys will usually let guys pick up the pigs that didn't sell through the auction in the $250 range.

As little as possible. I hate the idea of paying auction prices

So did you end up getting one bought?

Not yet. Still looking. Wont be able to make it to any auctions so hoping I find a producer selling some in the next week.
From my understanding the auction last weekend sold out and lowest was in the 550 range

There's another sale Saturday at the Lamar Dixon. Might be worth checking out.

The Duroc is a little lean in the hams.

He's a little stunted in his growth

Looks good! Where'd you end up buying from?

Local guy that usually just breeds 2 sows and divides the litters between his 3 kids to show. Had an extra so I snatched it up
