Pen is complete

Gonna try a cistern well for water. Actually, it will just be filled with a water hose and gravity to a nipple

Tip, in a fairly blunt fashion. You will be chasing that pig around in a fairly short time.

Seriously pigs like to dig and are fairly rough animals. Unless you have concrete under there Id seriously reconsider.

agree completely...I'd at least stretch some landscape timbers around the perimeter, as they'll tear the wire off that pen just scratching their backs...

I really didn't wanna pour a slab. That sand is built up pretty high and the fence is sturdy. The only way he gets out is to go down to the dirt and after digging those post holes I can confirm that dirt is as hard as woodpecker lips. It'll take a while for him to get out and we'll be on top of him so ill see a problem before it gets out of hand.

I also plan to pour a small slab at the gate and fortify it a little more

You raised pigs before?

Those are some smart destructive bastards.

The pig barn at shows is a complete madhouse. Idk how anything gets done there.

another tip. For waterers we used 6" PVC cut into about 3'-4' peices with caps on the end. Then drill hole near the bottom and thread in a watering nipple. Held probably 4-5 gallons of water and we'd fill them at every feeding, morning and night. Pigs are smart, so you may have one thatll stand there and empty out that barrel just to make himself a mudhole to lay in....or soften up that dirt and dig out of.

Yea I had them from 4thl till about 9th grade.

Never had a problem with them getting out. They were pretty content in their pen and every day I'd let them roam an feed on acorns in the yard for an hour or two.

I'm sure ill have some issues that need to be worked out.

Thanks. I'll start with only filling the barrel with a few gallons a day so he doesn't just drain it

It's controlled chaos to most people who don't know what's going on. With work pigs are easily controlled. We've walked pigs from the barn damn near to the RV lots to load up a few times before.

No worries. Bump this thread with any questions along the way and your progress. Who'd you buy from? Breed?

Randy Bryan in Zachary is having his auction this weekend. Wanting a blue butt but really tempted to drive to Tx and get a Red Wattle (Heritage Breed).

A Duroc? A lot of first year people get them since usually there's not a lot of them so there's a better chance for a kid to place a little higher at shows separated into breeds which of course will get a kid more excited to continue showing.

Got to go to national convention in KC for winning state in poultry judging. Some pretty nice tail around there, not that I knew what to do with any of it at the time.
