Step son is doing a pig this year. I showed pigs when I was a kid so it's not completely new to me. I enjoyed it at his age and the girls at the shows were usually really hot or resembled their livestock.

Starting fresh and built a 12x16 pen. About to start on the house and watering system.

Going get the pig on Saturday so I'm getting down to 4th quarter trying to get this thing done.

All in all after the purchase of the pig I'll be about 1k $ in on this.

Anybody else do the livestock show thing?

Showed cows from 4th grade to 11th.

I had a blast. Cow shows were always fun as hell.

We showed pigs and cattle all through school and just finished up when my brother graduated in 2010 but still hit some of the shows occasionally to visit with old friends.

I showed haltered cattle as a kid which is a lot more involved.

I usually take a non haltered mature female to the State Fair of Louisiana in Shreveport each year. That's literally catch the cow, wash the shite off her arse and take her up there right out of the pasture. They judge them in an open pen and run them right back to a stall...

West Fel or East Fel?

I worked the state hog ring the past 2 years. Hog shows are a blast.

Can be a great experience for the child and the family, I think it teaches the kids responsibility, the circle of life, friendly competition etc... it is a shame that some parents get so involved and raise and take complete care of the animal and then the child "shows" it, usually the same ones who inject steroids into the pig and feed them muscle milk etc

This is really unfortunate because you can tell the ones who don't handle the animals as soon as they get in the ring.

Drug testing has stepped up significantly so you better not get caught

Yeah, you agree to life time bannage if caught at the LA state fair.

I showed market hogs from 6th - 12th grade and it was a blast. I lived in the city so the hogs were raised at my uncle's place out in the country. Used to love putting them in a round pen to exercise them....which usually led to riding them like wild broncs

Had friends that showed limousine bulls and Charolais bulls. I never did because I knew how much work it was and always heard my friends bitching about it.

That was the best thing about hogs. No halter breaking.

I showed pigs from 4th grade-8th grade. Then hs baseball took too much time to be able to keep it up. There was a barn at the HS we kept our pigs at though.

Most people here would shite their pants if they knew what some of these show pigs actually cost nowdays. Same goes for cattle, sheep, goats, etc. It's a multimillion, perhaps billion, dollar industry today.

$2500 just to have a competitive hog and their feed is $40+ a sack excluding the supplements

It has gotten pretty out of control, but the market dictates the price and people pay it all the time.

Oh I'm fully aware, we were fairly competitive and my brother won LSU a few years back.
