How is negro a racial slur?

Only a slur if a white person uses this (in any context)...

I hate the word slur. It's overused and used incorrectly IMO.

Certainly depends on intent, especially as it is not in common use any more. In contrast, I don't know that I've ever heard the term "oriental" used derisively. Of course as with "oriental," negro is another Romance based term. Translates as "black".

Hells bells though, let's face it, we live in a pc society willing to accept the term "****rdly" as an offensive "slur". So at times it's anyone's guess.

I've never had a problem with it. My mom is from the Philippines and refers to Asians as Oriental all the time, and has never had a problem with anyone saying it to her. She's more offended when people call her Mexican.

The fact that any educated person would be afraid to type out the word ****rdly is interesting, for sure. You didn't type it out on a website where some pretty graphic descriptions of various sexual copulations takes place everyday and gay is a word used regularly as an insult. Considering your post count and longivity, I find that very telling, as you, yourself, seem to have fallen prey to PC aggression.

That word is completely unrelated in any form or fashion to a racial slur, but you're correct in that some people (usually uneducated or chip-on-their-shoulder white apologists who are equally stupid) would take that word and completely, without any fact or reasoning, basterdize its meaning. And for what? To remain PC and foist their PC holier-than-thouness onto everyone else.

**editorial after-the-fact comment: since my pst was automatically edited, I take back that you'd succumbed to PCdom yourself, when, in fact, the site is succumbing on your behalf!

it's not offensive it's just wrong.

Offensive in a "you're from Louisiana, yeah, that's like Texas, right?" way

No, that would be "Asian," which is overly general. People are idiots to tolerate that but not oriental.

If you think about it, any term can be considered a slur if used in conjection with a pejorative (eg. White m*****f*****, Black b*****d, etc.). Additionally, some terms, which normally aren't pejoratives, are considered pejoratives when used in certain contexts. For example, referring to a person as a Jew lawyer is ceratin to raise a few eyebrows, while referring that person as a lawyer of Jewish descent won't.

That's also my biggest problem with "Asian", it's too general to tell you much about a person's ethnicity. Lebanese, Pakistanis, Iranians and Japanese are all Asians.

I know it is okay if you write it on a check for a college fund group.

Enh, it is Joe Biden. We are so used to gaffes from the poor man that even when he doesn't commit one we still react like he did.

I am sure more then one reporter has pencilled in the headline "Biden says something stupid" as the working title for their article before the speech even starts. Bless his heart, at this point no one would bat an eye if he exposed himself during a press conference.

Not offensive, just outdated. Equivalent to "colored" for black people.

Biden used the phrase "wisest man of the Orient" which for me conjures up an image like this:

But that probably makes me "racist", not Biden
