I'm on Biden's side on this one.

Why in the frick is it offensive to use the terms "orient" and "occident"?

I do it all the time. It is nothing more than referring to the east and the west.

it's not offensive it's just wrong.

Offensive in a "you're from Louisiana, yeah, that's like Texas, right?" way

Who cares if it actually is offensive? The left pulls this shite all the time so frick them when someone fakes outrage about something they say.

Him saying something about "shylocks" or whatever it was he said was definitely offensive or would have been if a conservative said it.

Same here. It's a bit outdated but anyone taking offense to it should lighten up a bit.

It's considered an outmoded term from the days of Colonialism. The word "Oriental" implies a Western-centric perspective since by definition it defines "Orient" as relative to Europe or Europeans. The degree of offensiveness depends on where the word is used: in the U.S. it's considered a derogatory term while in many European countries it's commonplace word.

as was explained to me by an Asian, the Orient is a place, an oriental is a rug, vase, etc., the people are Asian.

That is because the word for "Eastern" in Romance languages is . . . . wait.for.it . . . . . . "Oriental".

I personally don't see why the term is so offensive, but I don't use it if that's not how they wish to be described. Not a big deal not to use it, tbh.

I get calling Japanese Chinese, or Chinese Vietnamese is insulting; however, referring to the region as the Orient is not.

In fact, I have always thought of The Orient as a mysterious and exotic place, full of interesting history.

I guess I can see how that could be insulting.

Biden is an idiot.

Anyone in the Orient offended by this are pussies and deserve to be bitchslapped by the Orients in China.

I once asked two co-workers, one Korean and one Malaysian, what they thought about the term "Oriental", and they both said they were okay with it. I realize that they don't speak for everybody, but I wonder if this is just another case of the PC police run amuck, similar to the idea that the word "Negro" is now considered a racial slur.
