Do you believe that the United States was founded as a Christian Nation?

Was having an interesting conversation about this with someone on Facebook. I tried to explain to her that most of the founding fathers were Deists and not Christians. She obviously did not believe me even after I provided quotes from several of the founding fathers. What are your thoughts on this?

I don't know what "founded as a Christian Nation" means, though. So, I can't answer.

Christian ideals are not encompassed in the Constitution, or the by-laws of this nation. Some are based purely on Universal rights. But not Christianity

Of course it was founded as a Christian nation, and that fact is as plain as the name of Jesus, which appears MANY times in our Constitution.

Yes, most of our laws fall in lock step with the bible.

I don't think it says it in the Articles of Confederation either. If I'm wrong on that, let me know.

If you read the private letters of the founders as well as their speeches there are constant references to "God" and "Providence (God)". Not a lot of "Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior."
This is also true of the letters we have from Civil War era correspondence. Centenary College was founded as a Christian School in 1825. (if you consider Methodists to be Christians); yet when class was canceled due to the Civil War the minutes of the last faculty meeting said "God Help the Right."

This really isn't accurate. Several of the more prominent ones were deist and that fact is mistakenly used to suggest the majority were.
But let's say for the sake of argument that you were correct, what did the founding fathers intend? I suggest they thought there was no need for an over-bearing government because the majority of citizens were God-fearing and did their best to live what they believed to be moral lives.

It was not founded primarily by Christians but it was explicitly founded NOT to be a Christian state. Hence, the establishment clause. Were the values of the founding fathers Judeo-Christian as opposed to say, Eastern? Absolutely. But the fabric of the Constitution and Declaration of Independence were based on Enlightenment principles, not the Bible.

No. It was however founded upon basic morality and many of the Founders writings say that morality and adherence to the belief in a Creator are crucial to preserving the republic. Basically if you stray from religion and morality then eventually the country will collapse on itself

Yes, I believe so. Most of those who settled were from Europe, which was a primarily Christian part of the world, so it could be said this nation was founded on Christian-based principles.
