Wearing down the defense by running the ball is a proven method to win a football game.
true, but only when we have more horses than the other team.
That's not the case all the time, especially with the upper half of the SEC.

you're conveniently leaving out the fact that two of Wisconsin's starting D line got hurt in that game, and they were already thin there. That was a big, big influence in our second half ability to run the ball against Wisky.
Wait so they were thin on the D line and you're telling me it was a bad strategy to smash into them all of the first half. Did they get injured on pass rushes?

Nice read.
Among other more obvious comparisons, it's interesting that the most consistently high W/L ratio is with run/pass >60%.
Also lowest run% of >60% rush group, '12 and '13, have the worst W/L ratio at 10/3 of same >60% set.
2009: 56/44, 9-4
2008: 56/44, 8-5
2007: 58/42, 12-2
2006: 55/45, 11-2
2005: 59/41, 11-2
2013: 62/38, 10-3
2012: 60/40, 10-3
2011: 68/32, 13-1
2010: 64/36, 11-2

We have significant advantages on the defensive side and disadvantages on the offensive side of the ball. The priority is to eliminate turnovers and take the ball away. pound our running game and controlled passing game. if we do that it gives us the greatest chance to win every game on our schedule.
Nothing wrong with this, but to run this offense you need a deep threat. You have to make the defense pay for stacking 8,9,or even 10 in the box.

No, I'm saying that we were fortunate that they got hurt. True, they were thin and maybe we would've worn them out anyway w/o their 2 guys getting hurt. But you should acknowledge that the injuries were a huge help.
I'm just not a big believer in the ground-and-pound offense, unless you KNOW you'll wear them out by the 4th quarter.
Running into a stacked box for 3 quarters and handcuffing our offense, in the hopes that we'll wear their DLine out in the 4th quarter isn't the way I would do it. I'd use our full playbook and run an unpredictable, balanced offense. Doing that, we should still wear their guys out late in the game, but we should also have moved the ball much better and scored more points. Instead of letting a team stay close and waiting to win a game in the 4th quarter, I'd rather win all four quarters. Just a difference in philosophy.

Very informative article. I was more curious about what the completion % is on 1st down compared to 3rd.
It seems to me that with play-action on 1st and 10, AJ would have a better completion % compared to 3rd and 5 or longer.

quote:On our first TD drive, we ran a reverse and threw long to the endzone in the same series. "Screen" to Dural in the next. Then we scored on a dive that broke free. Some here are overplaying the ground and pound as well as the 1 wide set while underplaying the fact that some "open" things were done. Some of those did not work, but they were tried. At some point, and this has been said many times before, it became obvious that the game was not in question. Run, the, clock.

There are a lot of great points in this thread, this is definitely one of them:
A lot of fans would probably be better off not watching the first quarter or two.
quote:
I don't think some of you understand the nature of Les Miles ground game. He's not trying to score every time he calls a run play in the 1st quarter, he's just punching the defense in the face. So you pick up 0-1 yard per run in the 1st, 2-3 yards in the 2nd, 4-5 yards in the third, and by the 4th quarter the defense is tired of being punched in the face and they start giving up huge runs.
There is a reason Les Miles has a winning record when being behind on the scoreboard in the 4th quarter, it's because of the play calling in the 1st and 2nd quarters.

Give it a try for the rest of the season and report back.

I watched Arkansas v TTU and it pains me to say watching Arky road grade the flashy passing TTU into the dirt in the 4th was very entertaining.

I agree, but it wasn't a case of Arky wearing Texas Tech down. Arky was able to blast off the line and open gaping holes from the very beginning.
Total domination, and I agree it was fun to watch. Would've liked to see something like that from our OL.

I hope you are right. Les is sure not - he's more predictable than any coach I've watched. Every year I think he will mix it up and show us a little wrinkle from that "secret playbook", and it never really happens. He's just got so much talent on the team that he force feeds it to the opponents and usually makes them like it.
Looks like there's something a little special about this group . . . things are gonna get nasty Saturday night.

Are you trying to insinuate that the rant doesn't know what goes in at practice? Next you'll be saying the rant doesn't attend team and staff meetings. You sunuva...

Has anyone done a breakdown of run vs pass on 1st down and the completion percentage, as well as the 3rd down run vs pass with completion percentage?
Don't you get it? You run on 1st and 2nd and let Cam bail you out on 3rd and long.
