Yes it does and that is why certain procedures are not to be done outside of hospitals.

I am not a doctor nor do I work in the medical industry, but I was under the impression that there is nothing ever routine about operating on someone her age. Granted physical condition is more important than the actual age.

In-office biopsies via a flexible endoscope is commonly done (typically by laryngologists) as a way to avoid general anesthesia for patients. Laryngospasm is a potential complication of the procedure which is often prevented with topically anesthesia. Performing an in-office biopsy IS NOT malpractice despite what is implied in the OP's article per the "medical experts."

You can google for more but a quick pubmed search showed this article.

There are plenty more out there if you are interested in learning more about the procedure.

I had to google her when I saw her name on the news. Yes, I recognized her, but I have no idea who she was or what she did.

What if the doctor performing the procedure is not associated with the facility where the procedure was done?

They also need to have informed consent.

This. Though I am uncertain of exactly what was done, instruments are made specifically for the purpose of in- office vocal cord biopsies.
The next level of care would probably be an outpatient surgical setting. Almost no laryngeal biopsies would require an inpatient hospital setting.

I come to the OT wanting to say mean things about an 80 year old woman that had enough plastic in her face to build a model car but then I think to myself its not worth it. The fact that she had a traveling doctor with her say's a lot to her health already. I don't understand what's wrong with growing old. I know many friends that will never get the opportunity because their life was cut short at an early age. I think growing old is a good thing and is to be respected by those around you because of the life experiences you were able to share. When I speak to people who fought in WWII, Korea, Vietnam, it feels like stepping into a time machine and really appreciate what they went through. It's pretty awesome to read about the battle of the bulge but I much rather prefer the conversation I had with a man that not only fought in the battle of the bulge but stormed the beaches at Normandy.

When you see an old person don't just walk by and stare stop and say hello in there.

I suspect someone connected to the clinic blew the whistle. As an RN, I have done it myself.

Agreed. Not necessarily malpractice but I bet there will be a lawsuit. If there was no signed informed consent for the biopsy with the stated procedure(s) and physicians' names then they may have a case. If it isnt written in the chart, then it didnt happen. Also, it isnt standard of care to perform a laryngeal biopsy during an EGD unless this was specified in the consent.
Regardless, there was some incompetence displayed by these physicians as they should know how to deal with laryngospasm should it occur intra-op as well as airway management...or have an anethesiologist close by. Very preventable death.

Seriously? An entourage doctor is not exactly highly respected in the field. And clearly overstepped his bounds. Are you a doctor?

This is where I am confused. Did she bring her personal doctor with her?

The problem is not the procedure, but the medical staff's inability to manage a crisis. There is a procedure known as a tracheotomy. For some reason the staff did not do their job very well. Incompetent!

LSUERDOC, thank you. I suspect incompetence at many levels in this facility.
