Like I said I'm ok with surging to a certain extent to help with supply & demand. But bullshite to multiple your price 4,5,6,10x the normal fare. That's gouging plain an simple.
"gouging" is a word used to denote a negative connotation. if you don't want to pay that, don't
anyone charging that high of a rate will make $0 and have to adjust...however, on the flip side, if there are enough people willing to pay that much, you'll get more supply of cars out there, which benefits EVERYONE

Get that logic out of here, we have people with no use for it.

but I don't believe in price gouging during a state of emergency...which is I believe illegal?
it's illegal, but it shouldn't be
those resources that are scarce will be much less scarce if people can make money by charging more for them
"price gouging" laws ensure that the supply of those necessary items stays scarce during emergencies, which is insanity to me

How would you feel if a restaurant charged you 4x the price of an entree during peak hours?
How would you feel if you ran a popular restaurant that wasn't large enough to serve all of its customers? Would you go with first come, first serve and turn people away? Or would you raise prices (and profits) while eliminating the line?

Right, and not only that, it encourages people who don't need gas/essentials to go out and get more of it, because, "Hell, why not"
After Katrina, I was in a 4 hour gas line. There's a good bet a number of those people were in that line that had plenty of gas. Also a good bet that people just wanted gas so they could joyride around.
Those who needed it more had to dick around a 4 hour gas line.
The last thing we want to encourage in a state of emergency is hoarding, yet that is what "price gouging" laws do.

Isn't that half the fun of a hurricane.

Charging $1,500 for a hotel room is not supply and demand. It's gouging. The hotel rooms are going to sell out whether it's 1,500 or 300. Charging TEN times more than a normal fare is gouging bro…not supply and demand…people still pay for it because they have to get back to their hotel in less than 2 hours…during Mardi Gras, you could have EVERY Uber driver available and the demand would still exceed supply…that does not give you a right to increase your price 10 times.
If Peche charged twice as much for their food between the hours of 7 and 8:30, guess what they would still be packed to the brim. Do you think it's fair for restaurants to double the price of their entrees during peak hours?

A gas station did it after katrina (i think) during contraflow....people needed gas...some didn't have that kind of money to get gas so i would think its illegal so that poor people can in fact make it to their destination instead of running out of gas while on the Interstate...just causing more traffic.

I would do the former. Which is the opposite of what Uber is doing. They are raising prices and eliminating the line.
As an example, I was at my family's hotel in downtown Houston after the LSU game this weekend….it would have cost me 60 bucks to get back to our friends house in the Heights…it would have been my only option had my family not been around to crash their hotel room…the following morning the same ride costs me 10 bucks.
Once again, y'all know my stance on Uber…I'm very much PRO UBER and I even am PRO surging up to a certain point…it's not ethical business practice to charge 10x the fare as we have proof this has already happened.

I spent 3-4 hours trying to get gas and there was no way I was out in line for fun...or for the hell of it.

Basically my concern is that Uber will make it even easier for hipsters to get out of the Bywater and into the rest of the city, which is the last thing any of us want. I really hope the City Council reconsiders...

People are confusing states of emergency and everyday normal circumstances, in one scenario it is against the law to take advantage of a dire situation, in the other scenario it is supply and demand setting the market.
There are some idiots on this board.

Actually that's the definition of supply and demand....Wow, I actually used to think you were somewhat intelligent.

The car service is required to have a $15 minimum fare for rides in New Orleans. The minimum fare is the highest in the country. Other cities, such as Atlanta, have a $15 minimum requirement. New York City has an $8 minimum fare for Uber users.
Well that's fricking bullshite.

It's capitalism at it's finest, you absolutely do not need to go to a football game or Mardi Gras or whatever other "fun" event that leads to needing to stay in a Hotel

I have used Uber close to 100 times if not more and have only seen surge pricing twice. Both times it was storming and there were no cabs available.
Some people spout shite without having any idea what they are talking about.
