It's been a few years but I'll be down there hunting in a couple weeks and there's a few things I'd like to take care of across the border. Just curious if anyone has been and if the drug cartel crap is media hype or legit.

If they find out that you're THE yellowfin they will hold you for ransom and sodomise you every night in the meantime.

I understand the fun that can be had there b/c we used to go dove hunting with a big group from Eunice, but I just don't think it is worth the risk anymore. I have a wife and kids now (i was single when we used to go over there) and I can't go back in good conscience.

I don't know about Nuevo Laredo other than by reputation it's about as bad as El Paso/Juarez. I can tell you that the shite going down in Juarez is not media hype and is actually underreported. I'd find another place to hunt.

Ask around for Heisenberg...

seriously - I know a shite ton of people who live in Mexico and the kidnapping is unreal currently. I used to cross the border often and I will no longer risk it.

Took a bus from Laredo (TX) to Monterrey (NL) and back in December. No troubles to report.

stay to the main roads. There are still a lot of Gringo day tourist to the border towns. In crowded places and nicer hotels and restaurants you should be fine.
If you drive in park at a lot with a policeman, give him a $5 or $10. He won't ask for it.
Your car will be safe(r)

Be careful where you go. Know that a lot of the people who have been victims of the violence have in one way or another been a part of some kind of illicit trafficking.

Bottled drinks. Unless Ice is made from bottled water.
Put some token declarations up high in the trunk or back of truck, have the Cubans stashed down low.

So you co-star donkey shows every few years? Nice.

ETA: Sea Turtle boots do sound a little fly. Too bad SilkRoad got shut down.

When we go to SLP, MX City or Monterrey, we have armed escorts and drivers at all times. We used to walk across to Nuevo Laredo every time we went to Laredo back in the 90s. I don't think I'd venture over there nowadays. Risk vs reward is just too high now. You are probably OK 99% of the time, but that 1% is a bad day if it happens.
