This.

They happen in Columbia, and they do nothing but cause backups and traffic delays. I've never understood why the fire department thinks these fundraisers are a good idea from a logistics point of view.

We do these boot drives at mine and I've always hated it. I would rather go in front of a store and put up a sign asking for donations for muscular dystrophy. Also, not going up to people, just chilling with a sign and some boots to put money in. Yes, at mine we walk all out in the middle of the road and get in your way. Other firemen complain about being spit on and cussed out, but, I'm sure it gets old for people getting around town. I will add, the poor black folks give way, way, more money than suburban white folks. It's not even close. Some of the most hard core looking gangsters will give you every dollar they have on them while whites will give us the bird

That's worth discussing...

I hope this is true and that the firemen around here get wise to this.

Then they will get out of the intersections in my stingy, suburban, white part of town and set up in the poor, black, generous gangsters' neighborhoods.

Traffic light fundraisers
Should be illegal. I hate the parents making their kids pander for some type of baseball tourney. Stop begging and work for the money.

Pic of tourney baseball team doing this at a traffic light please?

Well it depends on what part of town crew is located. If my area is stationed in white suburban then that's where my crew will be doing boot drive. I don't like doing it myself and I never approach a car unless they roll down windows holding out cash to put in boot. I never ask people to put money in.

Eta: If you think we enjoy standing out on hot pavement in middle of summer for 4 hours, well trust me, we don't. I love the cause, but as I said, I hate the way my dept goes about doing it.

I refuse to ever give a dime to anyone who approaches my car or accosts me in general. If I give to any charity, it will be after a great deal of research. I have never once agreed to even donate $1 when asked while checking out at Walgreens or other places.

Does your department require participation, or do the boot shakers volunteer? Do they get paid for the time? I have always wondered about that.

Yes, we are required and do it on duty. Many times leaving to go on runs while doing boot drive and coming back after run is over. Some crews aren't out there much depending on how busy they are, where the slower areas are usually out there the entire time

Eta: Nobody usually volunteers to come off duty, if they do they would not get paid.

Panhandling even for a good cause is still panhandling. Plus it is a safety issue.
