It's kinda like when I bitch that my sister's income tax return is so big yet I pay more in taxes than she makes. It bothers me up to the point that I realize I might like to get her tax return, but I'd never trade paychecks with her.

You've got return confused with refund.

I don't think the OP should have started this as a "their life is better than mine" type of thing, but there is a point that this stuff gets ridiculous. You do not need a cell phone to survive. 15 years ago it was common for any middle class person to not have a cell phone and we made it just fine. Why do we need to pay taxes (and this is coming out of those who pay's pockets) to fund this unnecessary program? I get food, I get supporting public transportation to get them to work, I get education, and I get the original intent of a land line for emergencies. But cellphones are a bit much.

I canceled my land line bc the cheapest option was 30$ a month. The telephone company lady told me 15 is their cost and 15 is taxes for poor people to have cellphones. Idk if she was exaggerating or not.

My wife has a semi public sector job (they work off of the hotel occupancy tax, so its not quite as terrible). Its atrocious how they budget. Its never how much do we need for this program and lets minimize cost. Its, well we have this much, lets see what we can spend it on. Then when they spend it all, they have cause to ask for more. They couldn't care less if it's done efficiently. And that's how all these programs are started and how they operate. "Hey we have some extra money, lets give people phones. Now we're out of money, let's add a tax so we can keep giving people these phone's. They need them now, we cant take them away!"

And let's face it. It's not like these free phones are economical variety. We're talking the latest and greatest iPhone.

It's not a better life than you, but I get your point.

If you work 65 hours a week and still don't exceed welfare, the logical thing to do is quit and get in welfare.

Which is what many do. Maybe not quit, but reduce hours to maximize benefits.

If you have dependents you're better off making 29k in wages, with benefits than you are working extra hours and losing benefits. So, 29k working less nets you more than 69k and no benefits. So, the things people used to do to get ahead like work overtime or a second job is fruitless.

If you see a wheelchair-bound beggar pull out a cell phone and get instantly angry, you are an idiot.

I don't remember the exact number, but I wanna say welfare programs are something like 5% of the budget.

The system is broke. Very few people are against some kind of help for those who can't do it themselves, but if you're familiar with the welfare trap, it's exactly what we've created.

The incentive is to stay poor, not work your way up the ladder.

So Reagan gave away cell phones from 1981 to 1989?

Look at that Vandy education...

Disingenuous people try to say stuff like that as a gotcha. I'd bet dollars to dimes he knows that shite is a flimsy statement.

Did you not read what I posted about the program starting in the Reagan administration or are you just being obtuse? Or disingenuous?

Did you read what you posted? It had nothing to do with cell phones until Clinton and W Bush

If you make claims like this not realizing that you're exluding major means-tested programs like Medicaid, you are an idiot. And if you do realize it, you're dishonest as hell.

Although I agree with your first sentence.

The government started this program in 1984 phones and added cell phones when they were widely used. The whole program is a Reagan administration concoction.

I don't even see what your point is that Regan started the program.
