You got that all wrong, they are saving the environment by removing the evil oil well platforms.

If you asked the oil co's what they would do you'd get this:
1: leave in place.
2. Remove and put in a reef zone.
3. Remove and drag ashore.

It costs waaaay more $ to drag it back to land.

I am glad I still have my 6 pack license and charter license, Guess I can start taking members of the OB snapper fishing....

This is infuriating!

Is there any chance the recreational guys can sue and take a page out of the environmental playbook.

Say the commercial guys are catching too many and threatening the fish, therefore it needs to be protected?

Try to shutdown the whole fishery for everyone in order to get commercial guys to the table and force nmfs to do an accurate survey.

I completely understand removing the navigation hazards if you really need to, but you could just do what the rigs to reef program is doing and drop the top next to the base down to a navigable depth. Unfortunately, that fund also got pilfered by a state leader.

Yeah I know, the rigs to reefs is the ideal choice for everyone involved.

That's going to be a steep hill to climb. I think it's possible, but unlikely to reach the desired outcome. Who would pay the attorney fees? Maybe you could build a coalition with some boat builders.

Showing legal standing to claim direct harm may be difficult. Then you have to worry about a judge killing it.

We needed charter guys like you in the public comment meetings to get up and point out the stupidity of all of this.

i'm still having a hard time "following the money" on this whole mess. i'm willing to bet that the commercial guys are getting BIG $$$ on their license since the nmfs doesn't issue anymore than what is currently issued (1,300?).
anyone care to explain?

There are limited offshore permits held in the recreational sector. Charter for hire guys are currently included in the recreational sector quota. They want their own quota that carves out a percentage of the current recreational quota (a public resource), so they can get paid to take people out fishing. Amendment 40 would hand/give a portion of the resource to a select few permit holders, so that they can profit from it.

If you're not a member of CCA, you should probably just admit it now.

Supply and demand. If they only make 300 Bugattis a year, then vehicle will appreciate due to rarity. There is a moratorium on permits right now. Limited supply of permits = increased demand and higher prices. Or some economic principle close to that.

Evidently all recreational fisherpersons are missing a few bricks according to Capt Steve Tomeny.

Well, I'll never do business with Steve Tomeny again. Congrats, Steve.

Based on Tomeny's article, he should advocate for-hire-charters being part of the commercial sector.

What he says is not that bad, I feel like it's his opinion and it's ok. He is skewed in one direction of course, but it's not terrible.

The bigger issue I think is the overall fishery population estimates that the Feds use to set the catch amounts.

From what I understand, if the population count would be correctly performed then the other stuff might work it's way out.
