Another place I don't see many talk about is Southern Utah. Bryce and Zion canyon have sights that rival the grand canyon and without the crowds.

This was going to be my answer.

Cathedral caverns in Alabama. Way prettier than mammoth cave.

I've been to Bryce, Zion, canyon lands, And arches and they are all better than the Grand Canyon. Unless you really wanna hike to the bottom, raft it, or do the donkeys, the Grand Canyon sucks

I found St. Augustine to be pretty meh. It's a giant tourist trap. The beach however is nice. Gulf Shores is pretty under the radar outside of LA, MS, AL, and GA

What are some other places you came across that weren't destinations per se

In the mid 50's to early 60's the Boy Scout Camp Grounds Camp Avondale

Camp Avondale

when I was 9 or so I found a clear stream running there with 3 or 4 different shades of clay that were orange reds and purples, under a canopy that filtered the light just so. I had left the camp site without a Buddy, big deal back then, and I was lost.

I eventually found my way back before dusk and have till this day no idea how to find it

What a place

Santa Barbara, CA--I'm sure it's highly rated, but it's everything one would want in a city.

Willmington, NC--close to beaches, and good architecture at a reasonable price (sort of a mini savannah or charleston)

Boone/Blowing Rock NC--Asheville gets all of the publicity, but Boone is a cool Mountain town that flies under the radar.

Portland, Maine

Most definitely, went up there years ago skiing at sugarloaf. Spent a day in Portland, the whole area is awesome.

Just went to Southport recently. Cool little downtown/marina. Seems like a low key place to retire on the water, while still relatively inexpensive.

New Paltz, NY. Ever wonder where some Woodstock attendees wound up? Yup, New Paltz.

The whole stretch from Carolina Beach to Oak Island is pretty cool for east coast.

Wife loves Blowing Rock and I enjoy Rough Ridge on the Parkway. Even trade.

Just north of Tampa FL by maybe 30 mins on I 75. Beautiful hill country. Looks nothing like Florida at all.
