why? because you say so?

but I laugh when you talk about peacocking on social media. How can you of all people bash attention starved people on the internet?

It looks like to me that you do it for attention, so you should be immensely criticized, as you would agree.
so are you comparing me discussing issues/movies or making jokes to the nobility of charitable giving?
and am i running to social media to post "OH shite I OWNED THAT FOOL"? or something?

why weren't they giving before, if they feel so strongly about charity (or that specific issue/charity)? why this charity? why not others? what other charities should they be supporting with these personal resources?
it's not about me. it's about them.
i know what charities i support and i do my own research to find out which i want to support

Yep. Look at me! Look at me! I'm donating money to charity!!!
I haven't watched a single one.

its about you getting upset because you don't think certain people are donating the way you think they should

if they made a video to post on facebook, with all the prep involved, then they care about this

we all should. again, do you ever criticize people for their bad decision making? or are you jesus?

its about you getting upset
i'm not upset. i'm pointing out irrationality and beliefs/actions i disagree with.
i'd be a hypocrite if i only did this with behaviors we all agree are bad

i don't know. that says more about people and leads to a legitimate discussion
I don't see why marketing a charity is somehow worse than marketing goods and services. If a private business had just boosted sales by 1000% using a marketing strategy like this we would all be praising them for their ingenuity.
As for people not thinking about ALS before the challenge blew up an estimated .005% of Americans have ALS. On top of that people tend to be purposely ignorant of the horrible things. Bringing awareness, and a much needed donation boost, to ALS research is a great thing.

again, do all of you support "the ends justify the means" in all other aspects of life? that's basically teh argument
Why would I have to always support "the ends justify the means" in every aspect of my life if I support it in this, benign, instance? I have the ability to differentiate between immoral, unjustifiable actions and benign ones.

it's only genius if you selfishly gain from it. it's a behavior that is terrible in general

nd, again, THAT is an interesting discussion...especially if we want the human race to improve
It is the behaviour we engage in everyday. If you want to argue that we as a human race need to change our inherent nature then that's a whole different discussion. But criticising a charity and people who are donating to it simply because they may have a selfish component is hypocritical to say the least. Everything you do is selfish, but everything you do may not be helping others, but this is.

there's nothing irrational about posting a video and giving to charity.

So is the person that sees this on Facebook who throws a hundred at ALS research on top of his other charitable giving a sheep? He doesn't post a video, so certainly not a peacock, but he "fell" for this marketing ploy to get you to take notice of a real disease and give money to it.

i'm not against marketing, and people are free to do whatever they want, but people who are swayed by marketing/emotions...we always criticize them on here (and the food board is the worst at this).

i am not criticizing the marketing itself. i more question why it just now took off when it's been around a while, but that's not a criticism. the marketing was obviously effective towards its goal
i'm criticizing the people's actions

what is the dividing line when it is acceptable and when it it is not acceptable? how do you align your intellectual consistency?

Dumb.
Every article I've read about the people who have the bucket dumped on them have also contributed to the fund drive. Some of them have contributed thousands of dollars.

Come on Slo you're smarter than this. People need to be aware of a charity in order to donate. You can't just start a charity and expect people to discover you out of the blue, the same goes for ANY business. This silly challenge has brought awareness in droves, hence the huge increase in donations.

In all honesty when it first started popping up on Facebook I found it annoying, then I realized how much awareness and money has been raised for ALS and I got over it.
I honestly don't see what all the hate is, you don't have to watch the videos if you don't want to. What is so great on your Facebook feed that you are missing? Happy Birthday wishes to friends and Candy Crush scores? Social Media in is 99% attention whoring in general, who am I to care if it takes these people 30 seconds of Facebook fame to donate to ALS? I would bet that most of the people out there bitching about these videos aren't donating either.

This thread is the pinnacle of 1st world problems.
1. Charity devises clever marketing campaign to raise awareness.
2. Campaign catches on and raises a ton of money
3. Some people are doing it as a "look at me moment"
4. People complain that some people are only contributing to charity for reasons that are not good.
If this is all we have to bitch about, then maybe we are doing pretty good

I wonder if anybody has had a heart attack yet from the sudden shock of having ice water dumped on them?
