Don't buy a set that promotes ultra or super forgiveness. If you are 12-14 handicap. Get some player irons or something very close to it. There are a few sets like to ping i20s were that bridge the gap between player and game improvement. If you get something too forgiving, you will not get any better.

8 handicap here. Recently changed from Calloway game improvement set. Wanted something just a tad more player oriented. Tried out Titleist AP1s and the Calloway Apex set. Both were really great sets. Ended up getting the Titleist set, but it was a tough choice.

Ok, a few responses. First my "beef" with hybrids is main a confidence issue. I just can't get used to them. I've hit a few and I have the same issue with my fairway "woods". I get them up and straight but direction is a crap shoot. I have way more comfort hitting my low irons. 3 iron is about 230 and 5 about 185-190....I carry a 3W but it's rare that I pull it out on the fairway. I either have to be just really felling good that day or have had quite a few cold ones.

My main issues would have to be accuracy. Right now I've developed a slight hook that appears sporadically. I think I have it figured out but I forget about every once in a while and it burns me.

So, I checked with Edwin Watts and they don't lend out demo sets anymore and only allow testing in the store. Besides that what are my options for hitting various clubs? (I'm in BR area)

get fitted and then pick a set that feels good and looks good to your eye. getting fitted is the most important part.

3 iron is about 230

I don't know a single person that hits a 230yd 3iron and needs advice on how to find clubs to fit them and their liking.

Lol you say your 3 is 230 and 5 is 185-90?

So your 3 is 30 yards longer than your 4? Makes no sense. I'm guessing you drive your 3 230 with roll but really only hit it about 205-210?

First....I guess distance = skill? Never heard that one before.

Yeh, Pro, you're right, my 3I carry is probably 205-210 but since I only usd it for shorter tee shots or long approach shots, I have to figure the overall distance when planning the shot. I have a litte height difference on it also. My 4 and 5 fly a bit higher and do they stop better.

Damn, all I wanted was a little advice on what were some good newer irons out there for my type of skill.

Hmmmmmmm....That does make sense. Ok, maybe I'll consider the hybrids....If I can find a way to hit a couple for a while.

BTW, in case anyone is thinking I'm looking for new clubs so they'll magically fix my game...I'm wanting new clubs so I can pass my current ones down to my stepson who wants to start playing.
