I think the B3 organ is my favorite instrument of all.

The B-3/Leslie Combo was one of the last great instrumental inventions. Having a B-3 & 122 on stage is like bringing a church choir, or the devil, depending on your taste. B-3's best friend, Leslie the spinning speaker.

You probably know this, but for those that don't, even though it was rare for a Hammond organ to be sold by a dealer without a Leslie cabinet, the Leslie cabinet was not a Hammond design or product, it was designed and sold by Donald Leslie and his company. Lauren Hammond hated and despised Leslie, he had designed the Hammond "tone Cabinet" as the speaker/amp system to be used with the Hammond organs, he once said that "if the Hammond organ had needed something like the Leslie speaker system he would have designed it that way!". Hammond had designed his organs as instruments to be used by churches and hated that they had become such a fixture in rock&roll.

I've never caught Joe Krown at Ralph's. I assume he's just doing piano instrumentals there. Probably similar to when he was doing the Monday night gig at The Maple Leaf.

His stuff with Wolfman and Russell Batiste is top shelf.

Yep. They became pretty inseperable after players heard the combination. The irony is that Leslie's intention was to emulate a large church sound. The cab could also have a warm, tube overdrive with enough volume, which a lot of musicians embraced and I can understand Hammond seeing as a bastardization of his sound.

The B-3 also spins, thanks to it's genius tonewheel design. Firing one up is like cranking a Model T. Add the Leslie and keep small pets at a distance.

In the 1930s when Hammond organs were first sold the AC line frequency was 50hz, and the frequency of the notes were derived form this, when the U.S. changed to 60 cycles/hz everything in the organ would be spinning at the wrong speed causing the organ to be out of tune, Hammond had to send people all over the country to convert the organs to 60hz, Donald Leslie was actually employeed by Hammond to do some of this work, but that was long before he started his own business making "leslies".

I'll bet that lunched a hymnal or two. Good knowledge all-around. It's an amazing, living, breathing instrument. Anyone who loves the sound should take the time to check one out close-up, given the chance.

This is true. I work with Leslie's son and he told me the same thing almost word for word.
