Intel Retail Edge members can get CPUs for sickeningly low prices.
My membership was approved, BTW. I just haven't done any of their tests to bump up in status.

This video should help you get started

I'll do the tests and take the CPU

Does it cost anything to take the tests? And do you have to prove employment (or can it be faked)?

You have to prove employment. I don't know about faking one

Why'd you buy the locked processor and a z97 board?
Posted on 8/6/14 at 8:11 am to bluebarracuda
What do you mean about the processor & what's wrong with a Z97 board?
Posted on 8/6/14 at 9:38 am to YeauxGurt
If you're talking about locked as in no over-clocking. I wasn't planning to. It's a small mini-itx cube case & it has decent air-flow/temps but why push it? Back in the day it was worth over-clocking, but now a days, why risk the instability & temperature fluctuations for not that really noticeable differences?
Posted on 8/6/14 at 9:45 am to YeauxGurt
Why pay the premium for a z97 board then?
Posted on 8/6/14 at 9:48 am to bluebarracuda
It was a good price for the mb. I don't consider $120 for a mb a premium price.
Posted on 8/6/14 at 10:09 am to YeauxGurt
But you could have saved $50-70 getting an h81 mobo that would do the exact same things
Edit: and use those savings to get a 290(x) and have almost double the video card power

Good point. I haven't shopped/built a pc in 3 or 4 years. I didn't research as much as I used to and went by my old standards of price/quality. I even went with an asrock for the first time. I used to only buy asus or gigabyte mbs. Cost myself $50 this time. hehe
Posted on 8/6/14 at 11:50 am to YeauxGurt
People have done much worse. Lots of first-timers go with a $200+ motherboard because they think they'll be more stable.
The Z97 will at least give you the freedom to add another 760 for SLI if you want.

OOOH, that is an important distinction I failed to notice
