GRT, sorry to hear about yours. Mine died in my arms banging on the door of the vet's office, just before they opened. Doesn't matter, nothing they could have done, his heart just gave out. I laid and held him for 3 hours before their office opened. It was horrible, but great at the same time.

And my other dog still seems lost.

I had to do the same thing a few months ago with my boxer.

I suggest speaking with your vet and getting specifics about how it will be done. Make sure he sedates the dog.

If you choose to be in the room, prepare yourself. I did and my experience with my boxer was horrible. I've had nightmares about it. I can't stress enough to ask for specifics (even where he will inject--don't let them do it in the chest).

Sorry to hear. I know firsthand how emotionally attached people become with dogs. It's a hard thing to do, but better than the dog living with pain. Good luck.

Damn that's horrible.

Condolences to the OP. I've always just gotten another puppy relatively quickly. No reason to wallow IMO.

Dogs are awesome! She won't suffer anymore is the only positive. Sorry to hear about this. Just remember all the good times.

Friendly, unsolicited advice: Reconsider this. I think you'll regret not being there for her in her last moments. It will be very hard, but you'll allow her to see, feel and sense you as she goes.

This is what I'm most afraid of with my current dogs. I have an 11 year old rescue who we got at 16 weeks and a 9 year old American Bulldog. We got the Am Bulldog because my rescue was very timid around people, and once she got a buddy, she totally opened up. The Am Bulldog is slowing down, and I don't know what his passing is going to do to my other one. Hopefully, that's a year or two away.

Ours went similarly. My wife and dad got him in the car and raced to the emergency vet. They said he went about a mile from it and the vet tried cpr in the parking lot but couldn't get him back.

I'll have to stop before I get emotional in the middle of the airport.

Garmish is right man. You need to be holding her when its over. It will be one of the hardest things you have ever done or will do in your life but it will be a great comfort to her, you can do it.

i've put down one dog and one cat, and another cat is real sick

I know the feeling, it's horrible, but know that you gave your dog one hell of a life

I'm meeting with my brother, sister and mom at the vet. She's going today and I plan on being there due to y'all's advice; it's just going to be extremely difficult. I don't know how I'll drive 45 minutes afterwards (I was downtown planning to bring a friend to the airport) back home.

It's amazing what pets do. I wasn't even this upset and agonized when my parents split after 30 years of marriage.

I click these treads to try to prepare myself for when this time comes. I don't know how I'll be able to make the call

Only people who love get hurt by death. I have felt the sting of death and my thoughts are with you.

I've had to put 3 dogs down so far in my life. It doesn't get easier. Take the day off of work and get it put to sleep. It happens so fast you wont even realize it. You spared it from suffering and have the rest of the day to cry and drink.

May I also suggest you have them cremated. Having to dig that hole in the backyard was worse than the drive to the vet.

We did this for my first dog. The ashes are in a little wooden box at my parents house in an upstairs room that rarely ever gets used. His collar is around the box.

I don't go up there often, but when I do, I always come down smiling.

I got the call as I was boarding a flight. Nothing like being the unstable looking fella covering his face and sniffling and stifling strange noises on an airplane.
