Go play City Park a few times a week, it's $6 to walk it so its cheap and never really crowded so many times I can hit a few shots.

I found doing that helped me better than just going to range and hacking away.

I played for 40 years before I had to give it up because of lower back issues.

As many others have stated, get lessons. Learn it the right way at the beginning.

Spend 75% of the practice time available on chipping and putting. A good short game will lower your scores faster than anything else.

The problem with golf is that practice makes permanent. If you are going to practice, listen to the advice in here. Don't just go hit balls because you will ingrain bad swing habits and make those feel natural to you. This will make fixing and changing those habits much more difficult in the long run. Practice from 30 yards in. If you can consistently chip and pitch to within one-put range you will be miles ahead. Hitting fairways and greens is important too. But let's face it, you are going to miss plenty of greens. And mis-hitting short shots is the most frustrating thing in golf.

Don't underestimate how much you can gain by just playing a lot of golf. Ive improved dramatically from January 2013 when I started playing again to now by mainly just playing golf instead of practicing.*

*I do hit the range, but rarely do actual drills or use any training aids. Alignment rod at most.

ETA: helps a lot to grab a small bucket of balls and hit them at the range before a round

Get a preshot routine down and always use it

Yeah but too many new golfers don't play enough, IMO. Range time is important, but only when used productively.

Assuming you've got a good attitude and won't get turned off by your own mistakes, my favorite practice is on a golf course where I'm not concerned too much about shooting a low round (so preferably fairly cheap, with buddies interested in doing the same, and somewhere that isn't packed). I usually come away with far more progress/fixes than I do just hitting buckets.

the first thing I did was take lessons from a local pro. I believe it prevented me from developing any seriously bad habits and poor muscle memory.

100% this. Get some lessons and start out with a good swing instead of just aimlessly going out with bad mechanics. Then get some decent clubs that are fitted for you if you find that you like the game.

I've never gotten why people do this for a recreational sport. It's like going out and hiring private basketball coach because your shot has been off your last few pick up games. It just seems dumb....but hey whatever

this is what I worried about and the main reason i started the thread. I'm a fitness/strength coach so I know all about bad habits and dysfunction in movement

And by "broke 100", I mean 98, lol. Had those 2 pars, a bogey, and a couple doubles. The rest were triple or more, lol.

Your math isn't adding up, on a par 72 your best possible score with those holes is a 116

I strongly recommend that you avoid practice and golf lessons. If you are never going to be a pro it's a waste of time and money. You can see instruction videos on line for free. If you spend 10 bucks on a one year subscription to Golf Magazine they will keep sending it to you for 20 years for free because they make their money on ads.

Just go out and play. I was also a baseball player and told early that my golf swing was too flat. Now, I learned that the flat swing is in with the professionals.

Who cares? Just go out and have fun.
