re: Would the Pelicans have been better off with Nerlens Noel?

I'd say that there is no way anyone can justify us winning that trade. If anything I think we come out close to even if asik signs long term when discussing both trades collectively due to position needs changing. I do think we get a decent pg between our two picks left over... Assuming we draft Noel with our pick that year. Holiday is no doubt better than any pg prospect at this point in time but those two draft picks and Noel on our team would look pretty good at this time. And those of you sleeping on Peyton... The dude looks like an absolute beast for the little exposure he's had so far, I would gladly have him as our pg and Noel along with next year's pick.

We would dominate the summer league.

Eh.... I think Noel and Payton will be starters in the league.... Superstars? I dunno but especially Payton I could see him being a solid PG in future

We wouldn't have drafted Peyton or Smart because the odds are we would have either traded the pick for another veteran and be on the same build path we're on now, or we'd have drafted Burke/MCW and not have been looking for a PG in this past draft.

I liked it at the time, now I'm having my doubts. Most of my judgment on Jrue is when he played against New Orleans and he killed us. Watching him this past season he's not as good as I thought he was.

Had they kept Nerlens
Pelicans were going to draft Trey Burke so the question is irrelevant.

I know the player they picked to be traded was Noel and the 10th pick of this draft as Payton so I am going with those two. If I start assuming they would have gone Burke, maybe I add 1-3 wins and the Pelicans no longer draft in the 10th spot (because Burke played all year vs 34 games for Holliday)

Lets go with the best option on paper, Noel and Payton.
Davis was already getting abused by bigger centers and he's even bigger than Noel (and has the frame to put on more size). Asik has the size to handle those centers and in starter minutes he played exceptional defense (and the team performed better with him on the court) and put up respectable numbers.
Payton looks like he's going to be a stud (offensively at the very least), I can definitely see him putting up similar Lillard #s (20/4/6) which is solid. But does that amount overcome what we lose in Jrue (14/4/8) and Tyreke (15/5/5).
I mean who could we have lured here with the ~20mil between the two?

If we are playing the what if game, then I would have preferred we traded our 2013 1st round pick to Toronto in 2012 to leap frog Det to select Drummond. (Davis + Drummond, oh what could have been)
Noel is lighting up summer league, but let's wait to see when Pekovic knocks him 20 feet back on his butt. I like Noel, but he is not a C. He does not have the frame to put on significant weight and he will get knocked around for years. He is a pogo stick PF with little offensive game and on the Pelicans he is a backup PF.

I don't think his performance was negative last season. I thought he played extremely well. He will never average ridiculous ppg just because of the make up of the team.

Jrue and Asik are already starters in the league.

Jrue is already an all-star caliber PG in the league
And Asik is great at the key areas you need from a true center in an NBA that doesnt have a lot of true centers.
Why would we want to take risks on unproven options that have an expected potential of the proven guys we "traded" them for?
Also as stated before, if we hadnt intended on trading the player we selected, that player wouldnt have been Noel.

Plus you got to give the guy more time to learn his teammates habits and gamestyle. I think that's often overlooked when evaluating a pg going to a new team.
And on the Peyton talk I was just defending his talent and speaking hypothetically if we had those players. Obviously we would have drafted completely different but who knows those 3 draft picks could have panned out into a better lineup than what we have now but we will never know.
We rushed the rebuild and it will probably pay off if and only if asik stays in new Orleans long term. One other benefit I see in rushing the rebuild... If Anthony Davis turns into the superstar that we all expect him to be then we won't need draft picks. He will become a magnet for us and with us winning early on it brings stability to the franchise for years to come. Ad will attract the top free agents just bc of who he is.

Who knows? And if it weren't for holiday being on the team, and no tyreke according to this logic, our cap situation is completely different, our roster is completely different and who knows what other dominos would have fallen.
There are just way to many variables for this to be a constructive conversation, without setting parameters as the op did.
