There are just way to many variables for this to be a constructive conversation, without setting parameters as the op did.

And one of those variables is time. Everyone questioned Demps' moves last year but they were judging the moves by how they paid off in 2013. It seemed pretty clear to me that the only way the moves made sense was if 2015 was your target for judgement day. I do question whether we even intend to target a $10+ million player at SF, but if Gordon opts out and the cap keeps rising, you could see the Pelicans go after Jimmy Butler like the Mavs stole Parsons. I don't think it's that realistic, but if the 2015 roster is:

Holiday/Smith
Tyreke/Rivers
RFA SF/Salmons
AD/Ryno
Asik/Withey

I really don't see how anyone would still be pining away for Noel/Payton and more lottery picks.

Basically we've traded 3 consecutive first round picks, Lopez, Vasquez and a shitload of cap space for Holiday, Evans, and Asik.

Which group makes a more competitive team right now? Certainly the last one.

Which group has more chance to win a title? I have to default and say the first just because I feel the second one can't. None of the three players we acquired is good enough to be the second best player on a championship caliber team.

And who would we have attracted with that cap space?

We have to remember that Dell is trying to squeeze every ounce of usable time out of Davis that he can, we don't know if he'll choose to stay in Nola

He chose to go with young players that had proven they deserved their contracts. name a championship winning team that had a rookie salary player starting. Dell didn't have the time to develop draft picks till they became those young vets we have now.

3 draft picks for asik and jrue is great by me.

Spurs Finals MVP

Kawhi Leonard

Cap space isn't always about attracting a free agent. You can facilitate three-way deals w/ teams looking to do something else. Similar to how Portland got Lopez from us.

Also, you can take on bad contracts and get other assets from them. I'm sure Charlotte is happy they traded for Ben Gordon a couple years ago. They wound up getting the 9th pick in the draft out of it.

....I knew that one haha I thought he had just got an extension, my bad.

Still I stick to the gut of my argument, most championship teams don't use those players heavily.

Is rather have proven nba starters over potential nba starters, even if they come with rookie contracts

Ok, then let's take a year from now. Aren't Holiday, Evans, and Bird Rights to Asik more valuable than that first group? If most or part of the trio isn't getting you to a championship, they are the collection of better assets who can be flipped.

This is silly. You're trying to say a bunch of unknowns, Vasquez, and Lopez are championship players?

Alone they are potentially solid contributors to a championship team.

As a unit, they are nothing more than borderline playoff - in the east.

The #2 option is better than the 1st option.

No, I'm saying that they allow us the flexibility to add pieces to put together a championship team. In theory, that's what they tried to do, but they added pieces that 1.) don't fit together and 2.) aren't good enough to win big with.

Based on?

All the games that this roster has played together?

How do you know this? By the time any of those guys became a competent NBA starter, we'll have had time to replace Gordon. Also, if all of those guys play well enough to be a championship team, we'll struggle to resign them all in the same year or consecutive years. If they turn into middling NBA players, that's all you have.

You mean middling players like the two SG that we pay $26M to each year.

Let's compare AD's supporting cast to the last 3 young stars that put a team on their back and made the Finals.

Holiday
Gordon
Evans
Ryno
Asik

vs. 06-07 LeBron Cavs

Larry Hughs
Drew Gooden
Zydrunas Ilgauskas
Anderson Varejao
Eric Snow

vs. 08-09 Dwight Magic

Rashard Lewis
Hedo Turkoglu
Courtney Lee
Mickael Pietrus
Jameer Nelson

vs. 11-12 Durant Thunder

Russel Westbrook
James Harden
Serge Ibaka
Nick Collison
Kendrick Perkins

The Pelicans may not have a Westbrook or a Harden, but I think they clearly have enough of a supporting cast to make the Finals if AD becomes the top 3 player we think he'll be come.

Our Roster is definitely better than the Cavs and the Magic roster, not as good as the Thunder.

But what did the Cavs and Magic have in common? Eastern Conference.

Lebron taking that Cavs team to the Finals is nothing short of a modern miracle.

I almost put "in the Eastern Conference". Still I don't think the current supporting cast is bad enough to say there's no chance we'll make the finals, especially with a star with as much potential as AD.

Why isn't AD allowed to work miracles? He's a once in a decade player for certain, perhaps once in a generation if he lives up to his potential.
