Let's talk about this. In my mind, it's a joke. He wasn't top 5 at this WC.

He was 3rd in goals and created the most chances out of anybody in the tournament.

He probably shouldn't have won the Golden Ball, but he was definitely top 5.

Muller should have won.

It was pathetic.

The guy had 0 goals and 1 assist in elimination play. It should have gone to either Rodriguez or Neuer (if there isn't a rule about a player being unable to win both the Golden Ball and the Golden Gloves.

Robben, Rodriguez, Muller (arguably), Zabaleta, and Neuer were better than Messi. You could probably include more than that.

I'm okay with Messi winning it if just to piss of the Ronaldo fans.

I like Messi a lot and I am fine with him winning it; however, I did not expect him to win it and I am pretty surprised he did.

I would've voted for Tommy Fussball, then Hummus Rodriguez.

Messi didn't score as many goals as one would expect but his presence on the field completely altered how teams tried to defend.

I still think the Golden Glove should go to Tim Howard though. Sure, Neuer had a number of clean sheets but he had better players in front of him.

He pretty much carried his team single handedly through pool play.

It's a travesty that James didn't win it.

1) James
2) Robben
3) Müller
4) Mascherano
5) Neymar/Messi/Neuer

James should have been a virtual lock. Messi was not even the best player on his team.

Interesting short article about Maradona's thoughts on the Golden Ball decision LINK

What I found a little more interesting than Maradona's comments were Sepp Blatter's comments...

quote:

"What do you want -- shall I tell the truth or be diplomatic?" Blatter said. "I am going to say the truth, I was surprised that he was chosen and [surprised] to see him come up to get the award."

Maybe I'm reading too much into or I misunderstand it, but is he implying that Messi could have turned it down?
