NYC restaurant slow service complaints caused them to do a comparison

A busy NYC restaurant kept getting bad reviews for slow service, so they hired a firm to investigate. When they compared footage from 2004 to footage from 2014, they made some pretty startling discoveries. So shocking, in fact, that they ranted about it on Craigslist!
We are a popular restaurant for both locals and tourists alike. Having been in business for many years, we noticed that although the number of customers we serve on a daily basis is almost the same today as it was 10 years ago, the service just seems super slow even though we added more staff and cut back on the menu items...
One of the most common complaints on review sites against us and many restaurants in the area is that the service was slow and/or they needed to wait a bit long for a table.
We decided to hire a firm to help us solve this mystery, and naturally the first thing they blamed it on was that the employees need more training and that maybe the kitchen staff is just not up to the task of serving that many customers.

I've been saying shite about the cell phone morons in restaurants for years. I was at a dinner with clients just a few weeks ago at a pretty upscale place in Denver and one of the guys was acting like a damn 12yr old girl with his phone. He took pics of everything while we were at the table. Then his food comes and he spends about 10 minutes posting pics and shite then makes a joke about how his food is getting cold as he continues to post the pics to FB.

I'm not really surprised

I guess I am kind of guilty as I took pictures of everything I ate in NYC. But it never lasted longer than 30 seconds.

26 out of 45 customers spend an average of 3 minutes taking photos of the food. 14 out of 45 customers take pictures of each other with the food in front of them or as they are eating the food. This takes on average another 4 minutes as they must review and sometimes retake the photo. 9 out of 45 customers sent their food back to reheat. Obviously if they didn't pause to do whatever on their phone the food wouldn't have gotten cold. 27 out of 45 customers asked their waiter to take a group photo. 14 of those requested the waiter retake the photo as they were not pleased with the first photo. On average this entire process between the chit chatting and reviewing the photo taken added another 5 minutes and obviously caused the waiter not to be able to take care of other tables he/she was serving.
This is ridiculous. I hope that's just a New York thing and it's not as bad down south but I'm sure it's still similar.

Happy Place hilariously tackles the "study".
That said, whether it's BS or not, I have no doubt that people who are constantly on their phones slow service. I've seen people tell waiters to come back multiple times because they're busy doing other things like described at the link.

Comes off as a little butt hurt.

In fairness, the odds that the restaurant had the identical number of people in there both times are pretty slim

Now that I re-read it this has got to be bs or this is just a crappy tourist spot. I mean half the people there wanted group photos? I went to about 10 restaurants in NYC and didn't see a single person take a group shot.

The story is obviously fake but I don't doubt that cell phones have introduced some inefficiencies to the average dining experience.

I don't know. I have a friend who likes to schedule girlfriend lunches with a group and is SO annoying about wanting a ton of pictures of each person, group pics, etc. Invariably, she involves a server. It's ridiculous. Ain't nobody got time for dat.
And then she posts 20 different pictures of the group on FB, like it was some important event. IT'S frickING LUNCH!!!!! And it's not like we're sexy young things. I stopped accepting the invitations.
My BFF and I had lunch at Jolie's a couple of weeks ago. We spent so much time talking that the server did have to come back several times before we were ready to order our entree, although we'd chosen our apps earlier. We didn't complain about slow service, and I hope she didn't complain about our leisurely and enjoyable lunch.

I'm definitely friends with a few people who document damn near every meal they eat out (or even cook at home) on Facebook.

Me too. There's even one guy who often posts pictures of his wife & daughter at the table before they get they get their food, playing on their phones--almost like he's bitching about THEM doing the exact same thing he is! "Having quality time with the family at Whatever Restaurant!"

First question that kept popping into my head during that rant was: What kind of restaurant offers free wifi access to customers and then bitches about them using their phones too much?
So many restaurants don't have wifi for customers. If you do, aren't you basically asking for them to spend more time on their phones?
That said, the "study" sounds like complete bullshite anyway. Yes, we can point to people we know or see that annoyingly document their meals and every other life event, or inconsiderately text at the table when they should be engaged with the conversation and meal. But this writeup is a total fabrication.

I eat out and take pics sometimes. I have never taken more than 30 seconds to take pics.
I did today when I was eating.

Oh, I take pics of my food on occasion. I am guilty of that for sure. It doesn't impede the progress of service, however, because the food is already in front of me.
I don't need wifi to use my phone in a restaurant. Cellular data, don't ya know.

Yea, this story is fake, and just another example of the service industry bitching about something.
