What does this mean? I'm unfamiliar with it, but couldn't imagine taking transportation from someone without leaving a tip. Unless you mean the drivers literally keep what is charged..
There's no tipping with Uber. It's a fixed price. Driver gets 80%, Uber gets 20%.

Hervey's getting out of the taxi biz.

So.. you're not allowed to tip? I mean, technically, there's no tipping with cabs either if you don't WANT to.

After the ride, you pay on the app and can add a tip on there.

It's not banned, it's just not necessary
It's like tipping in the tip jar at subway or some place with a tip jar, they don't expect one, you have no pressure to give one, but if you want to go ahead
Of course there's still people that get offended at any place of business that has a tip jar because they have a craw shoved up their arse

Uber tells you not to tip. I guess you could hand them some cash, but it's not expected.

You aren't supposed to tip and the drivers don't expect it, that's one of the selling points of Uber/Lyft.

From Uber directly:
Do I Have To Tip My Driver?
Being Uber means there is no need to tip drivers with any of our services.
When using uberTAXI (requesting a ride from a cab via the Uber app, available in select cities), drivers will input the metered fare into the Uber driver application. A default 20% of the metered fare will be automatically added and paid to the driver as a gratuity. You can select the percentage amount of the gratuity by signing into your account at uber.com then clicking the ‘Payment’ link at the top.

Not only do cab companies need to treat their customers better (i.e. respect, showing up, refusing fares), they need to evolve technologically as well.
Part of the reason the new transportation networks (i.e. Uber and lyft) are succeeding is because you can get one at the tap of the button without wait times on the phone, hailing on the street in inclement weather, etc.

They still have managers and marketing folks in New Orleans, just no drivers yet. That's probably who he's referring to.

Possibly but it's far from operational in NOLA.

That's what fricking hilarious about yellow cab around here. Instead of making an app, they bitched at the city and complained that the city should make them an app so they can compete. What a joke
