Any recovering nail biters here?

If so, when you quit for good, how long did it take for the "quick" to lengthen?
Also, how did you quit? Cold turkey is working pretty well for me.

Cold turkey too.
Decades ago.
Like some former smokers the sight of it in others to me is now repulsive.

I got to the point where I just decided to convince myself this is disgusting, and you're fricking disgusting.

I never bit them where they looked really scary/nubby like some people, but I definitely messed with them any time they grew at all, so they stayed short. My nails are really brittle, so when long, they just bend.
This won't help you since you're likely a male, but painting them kept me from biting.
Now, I get acrylic nails, so it's a non-issue.

Never bit my nails. Creeps me out like nails on a blackboard. There are products you can apply to your nails that has a bitter taste and it's not a polish. If it helps, there are all kinds of biologic crap under your nails that could make you sick.

Or build your immunity.
FWIW, I'll never stop biting my nails. I don't see anything wrong with it.

Bit and tore mine off since I was about 6 yrs old. Hated the feel of sharp nail edges. Finally at 28yrs old was so embarrassed by them when talking with patients that I went cold turkey. Now I keep them trimmed neatly and have not had the urge in years.

Only two things wrong from my perspective: doesn't look as good. If you can live with that, fine. Also, I used to have pain if i bumped my fingertips because there was no protection. Not so much anymore, now that I have quit.

I can make it a few days when I try not to bite them, but if I slip into a daydream at some point I end up gnawing them down to nothing. It's a terrible subconscious habit.

Same here. This thread will serve as my inspiration to quit.

Maybe I'm doing it different than everyone else, but my nails look just fine. Nicely rounded, smooth, and just the right length.
Just asked the wife and says my nails as just as good as hers, and she gets a manicure all the time.

I bit my nails through high school and then just stopped. I trim em now when they're too long.

Still recovering.. The best thing that I've done is pretty much carrying a file with me. I can't stand the feeling of them being rough and sharp so I would bite, now I file.

My nanny introduced me to the file method around middle school. Never bit them again. Still carry files all the time.

Been biting my nails since I can remember. I'll go through spells where I don't touch them for months. The cuticles will heal and I'll even need to clip and file them.
Then, next thing I know, I'm gnawing my fingers like a rat.

Yes. I quit when I finally brought the necessary tools to work. I have my own office so it doesn't bother anybody.

I have to keep them smooth also. If there is any catch in a material I cringe and feel so sick. I feel sick right now thinking about that moment.

I'm more of a callous biter myself
