Consider creating your own, personal FTP.

I've railed against the cloud in the past due this exact reason.

Now I've gotten lazy and my worst fears are realized.

Personal ftp sounds messy and expensive and not very feature rich. I've managed my own iis servers in the past so I know what a pita this is if you want to run if from your own PC.

Grr.

You're probably right there. Consider, then, a high-ish end (consumer, not business) VPN router if your devices allow for such connections in conjunction with a "home server" (in quotes because you can just use any windows computer and do some pretty decent fileshares for access purposes). Your uplink, of course, will be your limiting factor.

Get a router that has a USB port and connect an external hard drive to it.
