Sink the whole kitchen so it's on the same level as the people in the pool. I realize this is impossible in south LA, but it would be awesome.
Keep a close eye on the installation. My parents just got finished installing a pool and patio (not as nice as yours), and it makes me sick the shitty short cuts taken when they spent 30k+ on it. The contractor has even complained about a lot of the work.

Shaded seating for evengs/watching games type activity on the big screen.
I probably would back it away a few feet from the pool to make sure you have a travelway between the 2.
Kids? They are noisy when swimming.

So the things I love the most about my pool are the baja ledge, the bench that runs the length of the pool- you could do this one, and the spillover hot tub. Of these you could do the bench pretty easily. I would recommend it on the far side of the pool- from the kitchen- so people can sit and look back at you. My ultimate goal was a swim up bar but we couldn't make it happen.
Are you going to have it heated? We drastically extend our use with a Jandy 400k BTU heater. It would allow you to have parties in the pool for LSU night games at the end of September and later.
If anyone knows of a cooling system to install I would be interested there too. Damn pool was 95 degrees yesterday.
While you are doing this run a shite ton of extra plumbing lines and electrical before concrete is poured. If you landscape you want to have that there already and do it while shite is torn up. We have 3 spigots and multiple extra outlets.
Next what about any wiring for sound system around the pool or will that all come from the kitchen?
Any luck on an outside bathroom? People use the hell out of ours because of its ease. If not I think the pool would become the damn bathroom.
Will you have an auto-fill device and an overflow when needed? Make sure your builders think about the needed drainage from that concrete as well.

Here's what I have learned the hard way:
1) Put some sort of retractable walls in the outdoor kitchen...even some plastic sheet walls that can stay rolled up and out of view most of the time. You will want the cover for the sideways rain we get from time to time.
2) If you have a fridge, ice maker, kegerator (highly, highly recommend), or anything else that relies upon refrigeration and they are built into cabinets, you need to install some venting in your countertops. The cavities inside of those cabinets will get to a billion degrees and will kill the refrigeration. Please trust me on this. I don't care if they are "outdoor" rated...mine are, too. Refrigerators are only designed to cool roughly 40-50 degrees below surrounding temperature. When you get that cabinet space to 130 degrees, an 80 degree fridge does nothing for you. A strategically placed vent in the countertop will make this problem go away.
3) Outdoor bathroom is the best investment we made. No one goes into our house wet. It's a bigger deal than you think it is.
4) Do not pay for an outdoor TV. Pick up a used flatscreen on craigslist for small money and use it til it goes...rinse and repeat. No reason to spend $2500+ on an outdoor TV. I've been using an old indoor 42" LCD for the past year. No problems.

Sound advice. I think Will is pretty set on what he wants and don't think any of the great suggestions will change the layout. If not, he will live to see where some of these, as they are, are mistakes.
Imo, THE biggest is having the north AND south end open. We probably have more south winds than anything.

16x16 will be tight imo. When you take into account the cabinet depth, bar, bar stools ...... might get a little tight. I have 21x21 and it sometimes gets crowded.
Some of the best money I've spent at home is my outdoor area......not so much the pool, but covered area.

Is the BGE just sitting on the counter or is it recessed?
If it is sitting on the counter, it may be too tall to grill comfortably.
If it is recessed, you will need the bottom vent area open and you wouldn't want to have to open the doors to do so.
