You dont have to be a stud to get the #.
QT has overcome a lot of adversity with injuries. He would have been on the field a lot of it could have stayed healthy. Hes also a great teammate. He works with the younger guys and shows them the ropes. He does it the right way. Hes also pegged in as the starting DT opposite of Loc right now. And he is a physical freak that is explosive. Hes built like a brickhouse. Very imposing player. I think hes in for a big season if he stays healthy.
He also has had a great offseason. Hes a hardworker and is very very hungry. Looked great during spring as well. He and Hunter were going up against Vadal and Lael... and they took it to them. Moffitt has also said that QT is a freak and will make a pretty penny in the NFL. Ive seen him compared to Bennie Logan a good bit lately.
Im not saying he will get the #... I said hes my darkhorse behind my top 2 picks (Magee and Neighbors). But I wont be surprised if he turns out to be our best DT this year.
Edit: Thought he was going to be a SR for some reason, but just going to be a JR. Doubt he gets #18 now.
But I think its gonna be Magees. And rightfully so.

No such rule the NCAA recommends numbers for offensive players only. Collins can indeed.

Since when did he start playing defense?

He doesn't play defense, the recommendation is for offensive players and not a rule.

Not necessarily true.
They recommend numbers for a certain positions and its not really a "rule". But, the only official rule is that members of the offensive line who play an ineligible positions must wear numbers 50-79. And if that player ever lines up at an eligible position, like in a jumbo package or something, he has to notify the ref and establish that he is eligible for that play.
However, during special team plays the jersey # does not matter.

Unlike the NFL, which requires that players at each position wear numbers within a certain range, the NCAA merely "strongly recommends" a numbering scheme--and only for the offense, so that officials can better determine who is an eligible receiver. The recommended numbers: offensive backs, including quarterbacks, 1-49; centers, 50-59; guards, 60-69; tackles, 70-79; and wide receivers and tight ends, 80-99.

Yes I read that. Note that is says "so that officials can better determine who is an eligible receiver".
This is what I have found:
A player with an ineligible # can line up at an eligible position but he has to notify the ref and establish that he is an eligible player on this play.

Official NCAA football rulebook. Go to page 75 and read Rule 7, article 4 LINK
Cliff Notes version: the only firm rule is that the five interior offensive linemen have to be between 50-79. If a 50-79 player takes an end spot (i.e. replace a TE or WR with an extra blocker), they have to inform the ref before the play. Also, since college teams sometimes give the same number to two players, only one player with the same number can be on the field at a time. Beyond that, just about anything goes.
More in the "recommended" category, the NCAA prefers offensive ends/eligible receivers (WR, TE) to be 80-99, and people in the backfield to be 1-49. And they also recommend the numbers on the O-line get larger working out from the middle (i.e. C in the 50s, G in the 60's, T in the 70's). But technically those are optional, not required.
And in regards to Lael Collins being #18
But Im sure there is a way to request an exception for that rule or something.

Welter is the Scott Shanle of LSU. Smart dude who always recognizes the play before it happens but can't shed a block and is too slow to get the angles.

Good job you're right I stand corrected and see now why. Thanks for explaining and discussing in a positive manner.

Welter is a option too. Magee, Neighbors, Hilliard, and Welter are the options imo. If OL could get 18, I would no doubt pick Collins over all of them though.

No problem.... I was a little confused while reading it as well because it def says the ncaa "recommends jersey numbers for positions" and all that. Just gotta dig a little deeper to the eligible / ineligible player jersey number and that is where it has the OL # rule.
And Im sure there is a way to request an exception for that rule or something.

Once again the NCAA leaves us confused about an issue.

Its how they roll... I expect nothing less from them

I do like colleges freedom to freelance a bit. LSU especially has had players with numbers not normally used by players of certain positions and always has. The number 18 whether on a tight end or linebacker carries that tradition forward.

I think Welter gets criticized for a lot more weaknesses than he actually has.
1) He doesn't look slow to me.
2) He is not undersized
3) He is very good in pass coverage
I realize, of these, you only mentioned #1, but I hear these other ones a lot, too. My only criticism of Welter is that he doesn't seem to have good balance, so when he's running through traffic (MLB, so happens a lot), or when he's blocked, he gets knocked off balance too easily. This is what makes me doubt he'll be very effective this year. But he's a lot better than he gets credit for on the Rant. When the dline keeps the oline off our LBs he's very effective.

I am tired of this #18 business. But no Welter is not the best choice--I would think either Magee or Neighbors would be appropriate for this.
Collins has been outstanding, but is an offensive tackle allowed to wear #18?
Apologies--had not read all this thread before asking question on Collins in above paragraph.
