One of my children is about to buy one or the other.
Which way to go? Any feedback? TIA

Keep in mind this was YEARS AGO, but a friend of mine had a Jetta and it literally fell apart. The door panels, the radio, everything was falling apart. The engine needed constant maintenance.

I have a 2014 Forte and I love it, and the Optima is even better.
Kia's stepped up their game in the last 5ish years.

I've had a Jetta for a year and a half and I love it. No complaints. I don't know anything about the Optima though.

Any other compact? Consider a Toyota Corolla. Toyotas just run and run and run.

No safer car in its class and more fun to drive:

Honda Accord or Toyota Camry. Don't care as much for the look of the Camry but when it comes to mid-size sedans, those top the class.

I debated both of those as well as the sonata, fusion, and accord. I chose the accord in the end because the Korean cars lose value quickly and I really liked the interior of the accord.

I just bought a Jetta TDI value edition with a 6spd manual and love it. 60mpg is easy on long trips and it's a nice car. Was a little north of $20k out the door brand new.
It's a really nice car compared to other base-level cars, but don't let the fuel mileage go to your head. You'll eat your fuel savings in maintenance. The difference is you get a pretty nice car that's very fun to drive, unlike the kia's and Hondas of the world.

I just bought a 2014 Ford Fusion and have absolutely no regrets. Just like Kia, Ford has stepped it's game up in recent years.
My decision basically came down to the Optima or Fusion and I like the Fsuion's ride & space(especially the trunk and back seat) much better. Plus the new grill is IMHO.
I really liked the Accord but it was a bit out of my price range. I got my fusion used for 19K. So for the price and value I think the Fusion is one of the best on the market. Plus all the sites like KBB, etc. have given it exceptional ratings.

Don't know anything about the VW, but KIA makes a nice car. A buddy of mine has just gotten his 2nd Optima. Loves it. I've ridden in it, and it's very nice. Comfortable, great ride.
We just bought a Sorento, and it's the quietest SUV I've driven in quite some time. V6 has pretty good power, and the transmission is very smooth.
I'd say go test drive one, but then you'd get hounded by every car salesman within 150 miles.

Jetta is safer.
Get an all wheel drive vehicle for saftey reasons. More responsive.

Hobson's choice. Put your kid in a Toyota or a Honda or a Subaru for the same price and enjoy the peace of mind that comes from knowing that they're safe and that you won't be bankrupted by repair bills next year and the year after.

I just bought a 2014 Hyundai Sonata SE and I couldn't be more happy.

Subaru Crostek is far better than both of these cars.

I got a 2014 Hyundai Elantra, I know it's not a Kia but they are owned by the same company. I love my car so I would go with the Kia
