It's crazy Becuase I was going through all the comments and so no one said anything abt Upchurch, and I was just abt to comment abt him and the very last comment was abt him. But yea I wanna see if he can become that big physical D Bowe type receiver. 6'2 230 don't sleep on him.

How did it take 2 pages of responses 'til someone finally said Harris?

Did you not see what our offense was like last year with Cameron? We weren't a pass happy offense or anything like that, but the offense was 1 of the most balanced in the SEC last year. And we should be using a true balanced offense.
I saw what it could be under Cameron the first half of last season when they were putting up great numbers passing wise with Mettenberger going to Landry and Beckham with regularity we never saw before. Until, it reverted back to the more familiar power running attack that we are accustomed to seeing under Miles starting with the Florida game which leaves no doubt Miles suggested it. The passing numbers tailed off as they went back to more of a ground and pound attack like they are known for. Look, I know Harris is a passer, but he is also skilled at running. He is a QB that is a very good athlete. That's the difference between him and a Marshall. Marshall is a athlete playin QB as you said who can only run well. He's nowhere in Harris' league passing. But what I'm getting at is Harris would be more explosive in that type of offense because he can do both well. He can kill teams passing and running. And to do that you need to use that type of offense.

You said LSU needs to be in a true balanced offense. What makes you think they won't in this type of offense. Auburn ran the ball all over people in that offense, but couldn't pass worth a shite because of Marshall. This type of offense just gives Harris a chance to use his explosiveness at running more. It'll still be balanced.

Same here. He should tighten up our secondary.

What's you take on Harris' accuracy? I'm not trying to sound negative, but he has consistently put up relatively low completion percentage numbers.

As for as what my man?? He's a frosh that's only played in one scrimmage game. I have no ideal what his accuracy will be until he plays regularly. All that's being said right now is that he is a good passer, especially when compared to someone like a Marshall from Auburn.

Okay. His completion percentage in HS was fairly low as well. But, there could be factors that contributed to those numbers. You gave him a high compliment compared to Marshall, so I thought maybe you had seen him play on a consistent basis (meaning aside from highlights).

re: Outside of Leonard, what Freshman are you most excited to see?

Have you seen Marshall for Auburn pass the ball?? He can't throw well is what I mean. And I think Malzahn put him in there last season to run that type of offense because he is athletic enough to do it. But if teams would have forced Auburn to pass more last season they would have been in trouble because Marshall is not a true QB(thankgod they ran all over people). He can't pass well, but Harris can. I know what you are sayin about his low percentage passin wise, but that is probaly attributed to poor decision making. Something Cameron can fix, but Harris can pass his arse off. Throws tight spirals and has a rocket arm.

I know what you mean. From what I've seen Harris has a big arm and throws a pretty ball. My main question on him is why his completion percentage is always as low as it is.

comparing his senior year to Rettig's senior year

Harris
209/330 63.3% 3518 yards (10.66 ypa) 37 TDs 9 ints
144 carries 1153 yards (8.0 ypc) 17 TDs

Rettig
261/486 62.2% 3424 yards (7.02 ypa) 40 TDs 18 ints

Jennings had under 60% cmp I believe. Just using this though, he had pretty good accuracy. I've heard from several Parkway alums, that his WRs drop a lot of passes. This year I'd be happy for 58% cmp. Cam is definitely going to use that arm so his ypa will be higher than one would expect from a true freshman QB.

Just to be clear, I wasn't making a case for Rettig. I've never seen him play, and don't know anything about him.

As for those numbers, that looks a lot better than what I've seen. Per lsusports.net:

quote:

Completed 178-of-329 passes for 3,172 yards with 34 touchdowns and 14 interceptions as a senior

That would put his senior year at 54%.

quote:

Threw for 2,573 yards and 26 touchdowns on 152-of-306 passing as a junior

Just under 50% as a junior.

BUT, lsusports.net could be wrong. I've actually seen them make quite a few statistical/numerical errors over the years. So, where did you get those senior stats from?

Perhaps it's lsusports.net that has the accuracy issues!

*I was looking in the LSU Record Book last night for statistics on Mitch Andrews for the Jersey Countdown Thread, and I noticed they had the playing years for TE Malcolm Scott wrong. He played at LSU from 1979-82. His playing years were listed as 1982-85.

I'd be glad to learn that they are wrong about Harris as well.

re: Outside of Leonard, what Freshman are you most excited to see?

The passing attempts did tail off.... but theres something called game planning that might have had something to do with that....

The game plan in the UF game was to run the ball and dominate the TOP. They were on their 3rd string QB and just flat out had a crappy offense. But, their D was very good with some great DBs. And, IIRC, Jarvis was not at 100% for that game. We ran the ball, dominated possession and were in control that entire game.

And LSU vs Alabama is always about winning the battle up front. You gotta successfully run the ball and stop the run to win that game. And still threw the ball over 20times.

TAMU.... they have Johnny Manziel, a horrible D, and it was raining. Why would you wanna air it out and just give Johnny Manziel the football back with a lot of time on the clock? You dont wanna turn that into a score-fest against that man at QB. And it was raining. We ran the ball and kept it out of Manziels hands, which is what you need to do to beat them.

And, the reason I dont think we should run Auburns style of offense is because its NOT balanced, despite what people think, and its almost too fast that it hurts the D. They threw the ball 285times last year, and ran it 729times, which is 20pass attempts per game and 52 rushing attempts per game, which is 72% running the ball and 28% passing... not that balanced. LSU threw the ball 326times and ran it 523times, 25pass attempts per game and 40 rushing attempts per game, which is almost a 60/40 running to passing the ball ratio... Much more balanced. Plus, I dont want our pass 1st QB to run the ball 185times in a season in the SEC.

And when you have an offense that is so fast and uptempo, you dont have an advantage with TOP, which means your D stays on the field more. Which means the other team has more chances to score. Your D gets gassed because they are on the field so much and because the offense scores quickly. And when you D is gassed, the other teams O has an advantage.

quote:

He can kill teams passing and running. And to do that you need to use that type of offense.
I just disagree with that statement. Again, he is a gifted athlete... but hes a true pass 1st type of QB. And he can still use his legs in our offense as well. Roll outs, scrambling, improvising, etc. Wilson and the Seahawks dont run that style of offense, yet he still makes big plays using his legs... Just because he has the ability to run at the QB position doesnt mean we should completely change our offensive philosophy and run something that Miles, Cameron, etc have no experience running.

I dont get why anybody would want to let Harris, whose best asset is his arm, to run the ball 185x a season when we have a great OL with some really good RBs on the team. Let the running backs do the running. Not saying we should never let Harris run, because I think he should get some designed plays.... but just some. Again, Harris is a true QB that has the athleticism to run but he is a pass 1st guy.

re: Outside of Leonard, what Freshman are you most excited to see?

And, this team has been built to fit the style of offense Cameron runs... which is a power running game with a vertical passing attack.

Im sure LF is more than capable of playing RB in an Auburn style offense, but he is a better fit for a true power running game and not a spread running attack. As is Hilliard. Magee is probably the 1 RB that fits best in the spread running game, but thats pretty much it. Our RBs are a better fit to the power running game.

We just had a great recruiting class with studs at the RB and WR position... this team is not built to switch up its entire offensive game plan and philosophy just because we have a QB that can run... even though hes a pass 1st QB. We signed Dupre and Quinn, the top WR in the nation and another top 10 WR in the nation. Their skills and talents and strengths would almost go to waste in the Auburn style offense. Those WRs are playmakers and are better fit to the vertical passing game.

Point is, we arent built to make that switch.

re: Outside of Leonard, what Freshman are you most excited to see?

Listen we can argue about this til we are blue in the face, but I don't agree with your assessment either. Harris is not some kid who can only do one thing well. The fact is he can do both pass and run well which is why he threw for over 3,000 yards and ran for over 1,000 yards in HS. Cam Cameron is a very experienced coordinator that is familiar with a lot of offensive philosophies. He did a lot of college coaching running different types of offenses before he went to the NFL.

you make it sound as if Harris is just a passer. that's not true! If you give him a lil room he can take it to the house. Shit, Jennings is more of a pocket passer than him, but Jennings still can't pass or throw the ball as well as Harris. Harris is an athlete that probably not this season because of experience is capable of winning a Heismann for LSU because he has that kind of abilty.

And you gave game by game analysis of games played the second half of last season by LSU when their offensive philosophy changed, but I didn't need that. I already knew the TAMU game was more suited for running because of the conditions. But my point was the offense changed the second half of the season because the play callin was different. You could tell Miles wanted to go back to running more like they are accustomed to and Cameron obliged him because Cameron wasn't power running like that early on. That's Miles' game, but I saw nothing wrong with what Cameron was doing early on in the season. The ball was being thrown around really good by Mettenberger who had gotten into a groove with Beckham and Landry. There was no need to change against Fla because they could have thrown on them to, but it is what it is. Missouri with a backup QB threw all over Fla after they played LSU.

And you mentioned Seattle and Russell Wilson. I don't expect them to run offenses like that in the pros because it's the pros. But in college ball, yeah, everything pretty much goes. Whatever works. But truth be told I don't expect them to run a offense like that because of who Miles is. he believes in that 3 yards cloud of dust pound it out offense. But with weapons like you just mentioned they recruited and brought in. You would like to see an explosive offense utilize all that talent.
