that's exactly what they did with the first 5 triple crown winners. Wirlaway was by a empson darby winner.

No doubt, many many people were in attendance to hopefully see this horse win. And thousands more viewing on tv felt same. It's close to 30 years? since a TP

Cause everyone wants speed and speed and the quest for it means $$$$$$$

it's not so much the money. common sense tells you that a 2 million dollar derby pays more than a 500k 2YO race.

the problem.. the real problem you have is that you have people in horse racing who treat it as a way to make money and not as something to do so now, you have to make your money back as quickly as possible.

of every triple crown winner there's only been one (Seattle slew and not even a lot, 17 grand) that was sold at auction. now every race horse just about is an auction horse.

owners who buy a 200k yearling aren't interested in letting a horse develop while racking up 3k a month in training fees plus 500-1000 in vet fees a month for 2 years while the horses is "developing" they want to get paid and get paid asd quickly as they can. thus speed is cherished.

secretariat, really was the worst thing to happen to horse racing. all of this is becuase of him and becuase of the record syndicate deal he got when he went to stud. that changed the ball game. now EVERYONE wanted to get in on the money.

Not to mention everything the yearlings are given to get them sale ready. I hate that.

And 2 year old sales are worse. Young horses pushed way too hard to run sub 10 second times in march that usually have to be stopped on for a while after purchase.

Owner's point was very valid and would probably get a lot more people interested in horse racing by limiting the field so the casual fan could follow the triple crown easier. Takes an outsider to let the enlitists know.

Also made a fricking shite ton of money at the fair grounds today thanks to betting it all on the one horse who had won at the Belmont before.

I was pretty impressed with him cutting back to a mile, not that that means anything to you.

And, look everybody (ponchy). I'm not yelling at this new person who knows nothing

I'm starting to calm down from this shitstorm this idiot owner has caused.

no, creating / breeding / training horses that are good enough to actually win a triple crown will bring fans back tot he sports, not changing the goalposts.

I was at the breeders cup blame / zenyatta. that place was packed and it was cold as shite lol. the entire sports world was buzzing. you had 2 heavyweights.

what i hate about horse racing you take all the starts out of the game, you train shite horses, you bred shite horses, then complain that no one wants to watch. shite I don't want to watch sometimes lol.

I watch just about as much assuie racing as i do US racing and from top to bottom it's 10x a better product than american racing is. they race more, the quality is better, the fields are fuller, no drugs, no cheating, etc.

I had a healthy bet on blame in that one.

Still love that picture as they hit the wire.

It is fun to watch runners from everywhere. You see Australia win today? I loved his mom ouija board. Glad she's finally got a good one running.

i'm on a horse racing kick right now so i'm watching documentaries I have on DVD. I just watched one on whirlaway. Did you know he ran in the bluegrass and the derby trial and the derby all within 10 days lol? not only did he do that, he won the derby and set the track record that stood for 21 years and would have beaten california crome by about 10 lengths

then A WEEK LATER, not 2 weeks, went to pimlico and demolished a good field of horses.

he ran in 12 more races THAT YEAR, took off and ran in 22 more as a 4 year old.

I just don't want to hear anyone say we need to change anything with the triple crown. it's gotten EASIER from racing hey day and the horses have gotten WORSE at 2x a faster clip.

That was my argument in a huge Facebook rant. We've been changing things to make it easier and we still can't get it done.

One day it will happen.

All the affirmed/alydar footage makes me want to read the calumet book again.

you mean wild ride? yeah that's a good book. really good. damn i want to red it now lol. that needs to be a movie.

The hole in the owners argument is that even when you are rested.. YOU'RE SLOW. it's not like these "new shooters" came in and were setting the house on fire. all of you are staggering home lol. they just staggered less.

I would have a little bitg more sympathy if every year these new shooters were coming in and running sub 2:28 belmonts and stuff lol but they aren't. Horses that are good enough to run sub 2:28's in the belmont are good enough to be in the derby and usually are.

There are only 2 types of "new shooters

1. the horses that weren't good enough to get in the derby. You should beat them

2. horses that for whatever reason could not ake the derby but are there now ready to run. That was like today.

The owner acts like there are a bunch of high class grade 1 horses on the sidelines waiting to take on the derby winner like it's a video game or something lol. If you can't beat a horse staggering home in 2:28 and 3 then you don't deserve the triple crown.

Yep, he's ridiculous.

And I'm glad I finally read wild ride a few years ago. It was heartbreaking and mind boggling at times. i lnew the basic story, but i learned things too. i had no idea they started out as a standardbred farm. As a kid I remember driving past and being in awe of the place. I stole a brochure my parents got on a tour and kept it on my bookshelf and would draw pictures out of it.

Poor alydar.think ill read it again this week.

But this is what we do in society these days. Don't like or understand the rules (casual fans) we demand change. Look at what happened to NASCAR. After Earnhardt's death, more media and casual fans started paying attention to NASCAR. Shortly after the media started demanding a change to the way NASCAR crowned they champion. After a while NASCAR caved and gave us this "chase" which has ruined racing for me. It completely changed the sport. Or course media outcry changed other rules in NASCAR that helped push me away.

Get ready, some media figure is going to take this rant and run with it and demand a change and the the TC will be so watered down no one will care anymore.

I'm with you. The only issue I have with your example of Whirlaway is that horses aren't prepared to run that much in that short of a time anymore. In Whirlaway's day if a horse broke down, they shot him. So change is good sometimes.

Keep this year's three year old field in perspective. If Secretariat had run the same time in yesterday's Belmont, the margin of victory would be pretty close to the same as 1973.

the owner was on gma this morning and looked even worse. he compared chrome running against fresh horses to him playing basketball against a kid in a wheel chair.
