Start shipping to Illanois. When they finally pass the slots bill, their purses will be big. And How far is fairmount Park? They are trying to keep them from the slots, so Casino Queen doesnt get hit, but legally they will get killed in court for excluding 1 track over the others.

I believe u only need to be bred or foaled for illanoy incentives. They always joked that they would breed them in Kentucky, then fly the foal into Illinois and claim to be bred and foaled.

I'm with you. The only issue I have with your example of Whirlaway is that horses aren't prepared to run that much in that short of a time anymore. In Whirlaway's day if a horse broke down, they shot him. So change is good sometimes.

THEN PREPARE THEM TO RUN THAT MUCH

i don't understand why everyone thinks the answer is anything but train them better.

if 99% of the horses that ran today broke down they would be put down instantly. There are probably 15 horses running today that if they broke down on the track they wouldn't put down instantly beucase the public outcry would be too much.

But if thisisformyninjas lol a 5k claimer that runs at Evangeline breaks down, bye bye buddy.

And that's humane thing to do in that situation.

That's another thing. I watch aussie racing 4-5 nights a week and i've seen 2 break downs in the last 2 years. 2. 2. total. And one of them didn't even die just came up lame.

how can they race more and break down less? much much less.

america is pretty much the only country with the horse break down problem. It's no where near this high everywhere else. why is that?

Not surprising - guy is an old cowboy-type...

From Arizona up through dusty Central Valley in California...there is no truer maxim...you see these old cowboy farts and they all just don't give a shite...

...and frankly don't understand our PC or public decorum ways.

You see them once you go inland in Cali...there's something about getting to a certain age...where these guys just say phuck it - and stop trying to appease people - living out away from everyone - among horses, cattle, etc...nice people...but they just don't give shite about what society says is right.

Im definitely not a pc guy... but his analogy was just plain retarded. I could see if he compared it to a football team playing with 10 days rest against a team that played 3 games in 10 days or something.... but how could you compare yourself playing a kid in a wheelchair in a basketball game?

Maybe Horse racing media doesn't educate (or can't) fly by night fans who only watch 3 races.

Its amazing to me how little the old course records are brought up. For example in the Secretariat thread, its stated he would have crushed this field.

I think there is a misconception by casual observers that horses today, like athletes in most sports are better today than yesteryear, which is not true. This leads to the idea that something mischievous is going on, when its really what y'all say, shitty horses.

It's really amusing if you think about it

we're cheating more, much more, and yet the horses are slower and can't run as much or as far.

There is not a profession in america that has went to shite faster than a professional horse race trainer.

My husband is pretty good. Cares about the horses and does what is right for them.

I take a bit of offense to that.

I have tried to overlook his tirade, thinking an emotional reaction to the loss, accepting the fact that he will be back to work in a machine shop on Tue. Unfortunately, he will probably be seen again & again because the media loves controversy in any sport & gets few opportunities in today's racing. If all else fails, ESPN will create a controversy.
But I am afraid I have about had it. If he would have gone away after his post race tirade, I would be fine. Now the true gentlemen in this sport are going to pulled through the wringer. He says some of the competition took a "coward's way out", "if you think you have a horse, run him". Think he should look at a little history before making such statement.
I use one example to define "run him", Whirlaway in 1941. Runs the Blue Grass on April 24, the Derby Trial on April 29, wins the Derby on May 3. Has a rest & wins the Preakness May 31 & one week later, June 7, wins the Crown.
Said in another post, he needs to lick his wounds, keep his mouth shut & prep for the Breeders Cup.

I'm pretty sure the preakness was a week after the derby, then the break. Could be wrong but I don't think I am

1941 Preakness Stakes
Date/Track: 5/31/1941, Pimlico Race Course
Distance: R1 3/16 m (Dirt)
Age/Sex: 3 M

Belmont was the next weekend, June 7 - still three races in 5 weeks, but Whirlaway ran 2 races the week before the Derby. Hard to believe compared to the modern era.

While no two scenarios ever line up perfectly, in 1971, a dead tired Canonero II finished 4th to a "fresh" Pass Catcher who had skipped the earlier two races. Certainly, this predates a points system and it predates the "changing breed", but the point is that this is the way the Triple Crown has been for ages. To hear the spoiled angry tirade of Steve Coburn, its easy to see that he has no appreciation of the sport or its history.

Too, I think of 1969 when Frank McMahon overruled Johnny Longden. The tired Majestic Prince couldn't hang with Arts and Letters - who HAD run in both the other two...but the point is that this IS a hard feat to pull off. Always has been. Always should be.

Tonalist bagged $800,000 for his owners by winning the Belmont. They should tell Steve Coburn to have a coke and a smile and shut the frick up.
