Doing some back bay fishing, possibly off shore if the seas arent to bad. Give me some good reasons, bad reasons. And how hard is it to navigate in and around Destin. Watched Bill Dance smoke some reds by the bridge between Ft.Walton and Destin on tv. Thanks for the imput. Oh its a 20 footer with a 115.

3 day license is cheap. You can catch reds, specks and flounder in the Santa Rosa Sound just south of Navarre. Grass flats there that I yak fish when I visit my parents.

10 hr haul plus finding a spot to store the boat is rough. I would jut rent a boat for a day if you want to go out once.

I guess that depends on how long you will be staying, how many days you will be boating, and whether or not you have a convenient place to launch the boat and park the trailer.
If you will be there more than 3 or 4 days and are staying at a place with a boat slip, it would be really nice to have your own boat.
If not, I would just rent one.
You should do a cost/benefit analysis on that.

My Dad did it once out of all the years we went down there. We tubed one afternoon in the bay and fished briefly one other morning. He never towed it again.

After that we always just chartered a fishing trip, and did the beach/golf thing the rest of the time.

I think the towing, then parking, extra gas etc. was not worth it, and that was when gas was cheap.

you can catch pretty big specks bankfishing on the south side of santa rosa island right before the bridge to destin. they are biting pretty good there this year too according to a friend who lives there. says he catches his limit in bout an hour avg size 2 lbs. no need to waste all that gas when you can catch from shore

My dad did it once, circa 1997. We had the company condo booked the same week Hurricane Danny smashed Mobile and the pan handle, and damn it, we were going to the beach. We lost all the life jackets when a hatch blew open while crossing Mobile Bay, but it gets better.

Dad had the lower unit serviced right before we went down and, unbeknownst to us, the shop failed to put the gasket on the lower unit drain plug. We've all experienced the amazingly calm weather after a tropical event blows through, so shortly after arriving we loaded up and set off. We launched in the bay are rode around for a little while, finally deciding that it was calm enough to brave the pass and go ride by the condo and wave to mom.

About halfway to the condo, now very much in the gulf, the engine comes to a complete and LOCKED UP halt. I mean running wide open and then a violent mechanical noise. That little gasket was apparently very important. All of the lower unit oil had leaked out.

We put the 64 lb thrust trolling motor to the test trolling all the way back and through the pass to the marina. That 21' boat was pitching up and down with the trolling motor prop come out of the water every 3 seconds. Made for a very long afternoon. Not to mention winching the damn boat onto the trailer. Dad busted his arse on the algae covered launch too. That was the last time we pulled the boat to Destin.

Shouldn't be too bad just make sure your tires and bearings are in good shape. Pump them with grease and don't pull over 65mph preferably 60 so nothing gets too hot. ALso check the grease and tires when you pull in at rest stops.
