re: Official Mud and Water Appreciation--Changing things up

I'm bummed, but honestly can't say I'm shocked.

Correct me if I'm off base here, but I really don't think BR has the market/scene to support Mud & Water on top of venues like Chelsea's that are in more "desirable" locations and Spanish Moon that is already so established. There just aren't enough people that won't settle for sitting in a shithole like Bogies (I loved Bogies) or seeing some shitty country act or Chee Weez/Molly Ringwalds. As a BR native, I know that the location on South isn't seedy/sketchy or all that difficult to get to, but I understand why masses of LSU students and the like would be apprehensive to go to a show there when they could go to their comfort zone at Chelsea's or Spanish Moon. Kind of a tweener location, to be quite honest.

Bernie Worrell was a perfect microcosm of the problem (granted it was in the middle of finals). There were like 10 people there, while I saw pictures of a packed Kishi Bashi show at Spanish Moon from the same night.

Best of luck, JW. If you keep getting the names you've been getting, you'll do just fine.

This isn't a case of location, but more of the two people involved not seeing eye to eye and agreeing to part ways...

It was a dismal crowd. More than 10 people, though.

Bernie was booked because it was Bernie. I can't pass on that show. There were 50 people paid and that's an okay bar sales night for a Wednesday. It's a tough science ..... we did 125 for Joe Pug on a Monday for instance out of nowhere.

regardless .... we didn't go out of business or move the location because of lack of bar sales. The bar was paying for itself and turning a small profit on certain months. We did plenty of private events and public events that you might not have known about.

I am a real job and career, so alot of this was a passion project that I love doing. And will continue to over the summer with M+W productions then hopefully M+W part II in BR. And no doubt about it the Beatnik in NOLA.

Fair enough. I was really just speculating. Even though it isn't the reason for the split, I really think there may be some validity to what I said re: the BR music scene.

I think people undervalue residencies at venues. Have the same band play every Monday or something. I know you are banking on the band progressing and drawing an increasing crowd as time passes, but I think it is an intelligent risk. Baton Rouge needs a heady hangout with jam bands, funk, jazz, etc... "Hippie" is cool again- take advantage of it.

Just my two cents...maybe I will do it

Sounds like this decision has more to do with a bad business partner than anything else.

I tried with Henry Gray happier hour every Wednesday, but his "agent" was flaky and i didn't get a chance to build the night.

There's been a jazz night there for a while right? Probably one of the only ones in town

I dont disagree that the location isn't the best, but I believe the smaller crowds are more due to the type of artists he is booking (not household names/BR favs) and goes more to the taste (or knowledge) of the average BR music fan... A lot of the names wouldn't be huge draws in bigger cities. That said, I would applaud him for his willingness to bring these in, as well as some of the big draws he has wrangled away from the conventional BR venues.

I don't doubt that location may play in to some peoples plans... or for the occasional pop in.. But by and large, if someone wants see a show, I don't think the location is a big issue...

A monthly residency would be something BR could probably get into. I'd welcome it

M&W was doing a jazz night and it was a good crowd

I am talking about near campus.

It just sucks that the area surrounding LSU is lackluster at best. I am very jealous of other SEC cities like Oxford and Athens in that regard. Tigerland is embarrasing.

For a school that has the #1 landscape architecture program in the country the layout of the south gate area is abysmal.

Did you miss my question back on page 2 about the Mulligan Brothers show that was scheduled for June 20.? Just wondering if has been completely cancelled or if it will be relocated? I was planning on going to see them at the Oyster Festival this weekend but it is going to be a sloppy mess out there. If I will have the opportunity to catch them somewhere else in a couple of weeks I'll probably pass on the Fest this weekend.

we along with the band's mgmt decided it was better to postpone. Thought about moving it to Chelsea's, but don't want to muddle them up in our transition

re: Official Mud and Water Appreciation--Changing things up

I don't think the location would be that much of a factor. The Red Dragon is doing very well and it's in about the worst place you could put a venue. The potential is definitely there. A good location for the new place would certainly help to attract some of the college crowd in addition to the locals. I know Mud+Water was starting to come up in more random conversations around me than had been in the past, so the word was getting out.
