Thanks. I checked into UZR more after reading your thread. It's a cool stat, but sounds like there is a whole lot of room for human error as it's based on a person's judgement of a play. Also sounds like UZR is thrown off negatively by defensive shifts, and the Cubs shifted a whole lot the last few seasons. Everything I read says to take UZR lightly as it has its faults.

Barney did something awesome. He had a kid and now we get alcantara for a couple days while barney does paternity leave.

I'll take two days of AA over a season of barney. Wonder if he'll play OF (since he's been doing that at AAA) or if he'll fill in at 2b.

Since it's only two days, and the next two games are against right handers, I'd imagine Valbuena will play 3B and Alcantara 2B with Coghlan, Sweeney and Schierholtz in the OF. Coghlan's got his line up to .262/.336/.438 after a nine game hitting streak. I imagine Renteria will want to keep him in the lineup.

I think it's worth considering sending Lake down and keeping AA up after the 2 days. Not gonna happen but i'd support.

I would definitely be okay with that. We may not have to wait long if Schierholtz gets traded, though. I imagine there's room for Lake and Alcantara then.

And here's something. What are they going to do with Mike Olt? You have to think Kris Bryant is going to be the third baseman starting in May of next year at the latest, right? If Valbuena gets traded, which would be difficult for the Cubs to swallow but easy to accomplish, does Olt take over? I think you have to let him try. You have to teach him, get him to put in extra work (which I think he does) and adapt. He can definitely hit. I think it's there. He is just not confident.

Olt has way too much power to give up on this early in his career. Rizzo struggled to hit when he first came up too. I think Olt will be given time to have a turnaround, whether it be at the end of this year or Spring Training and the beginning of next year. I still think Bryant could get moved to the outfield at some point.

I don't want the Cubs to give up on Olt. I just can't see it. He's been really bad. Like, really really bad. But I have a hard time thinking he's this bad. And he's only 25.

He's Matt Dominguez with extra pop in his bat. There's a place for him in the majors but not someone I want as my everyday 3rd baseman for the long haul... unless the rest of my team was stacked offensively. Profiling as being a plus defender and plus power, he should have a long career.

Yeah he looks absolutely lost at the plate a lot of the time. Has absolutely no confidence. Sometimes its surprising how badly he swings and misses.
He did very well in Spring Training though. He hit .276 and had a .317 OBP. I get it that it wasn't all major league pitching, but still. Damn.

I mean, you know it's there for Olt. It's just like one of those mental blocks he has to break through. Are his HR's lucky? I don't think so. But what he needs to do is work counts and realize where his hittable pitches are. That's easy for a guy on the internet to say, but when you hit rock bottom you have to start there, with the fundamentals, and work your way up. At least that's how I see it.
This is really just me writing a love letter to Mike Olt because I really do think he can be a good MLB hitter.

All very true.
Definitely agree. When he hits it, he fricking mashes it.
I feel ya.

I'm not even sure I disagree with this, but my hopes that it was all 'allergies' and 'dry eyes' that explained the sharp fall off he had have dwindled.

That's not it at all. It's the lack of playing time. How is he supposed to build on anything if he can't play most days? That's a function of Valbuena having a really good year and Olt not doing enough to stay on the field against right handers.

This sounds familiar...and when that one got rectified it didn't turn out so well.

Eh, Olt did have a stretch in there for a while where he played almost every day. It didn't work out and it got to the point where they have more confidence in having Barney in there.
Clearly RR doesn't have confidence in either Olt or Lake at all. Yesterday against the Reds in a 4-2 game with bases loaded and one out, RR bent over when the Reds brought in Manny Parra to face Coghlan and Sweeney without using Lake or Olt as a pinch hitter. I don't mind Coghlan hitting since he has been so incredibly hot for the last couple weeks, but either option would have been viable for a pinch hitter in that spot.

I figure over the long haul only playing time helps a player get better or not get better. Look at J. D. Martinez in Detroit.
I'm not saying Olt has earned this right. However, I think if the Cubs want to see what they have in Olt, play him. Once Valbuena is gone, if that happens, play Olt.
