Martin fits with anyone. No one is saying he's not good. That seems to be a hangup. Would anyone be concerned with year 1 and 2 of that contract?

The winter meetings will have a lot more zest this year. I'm looking forward to it.

What mold doesn't Baez fit for this new regime?

Yeah, this is definitely where me and you guys will have to agree to disagree.

Impatient mostly. It's not just K's because as we know other prospects they've drafted have those but, philosophically the FO likes guys who will grind out AB's and take walks. That's not Baez. Now his he certainly fits the idea of gather as much power as you can as it's now at a premium.

This isn't advocating to trade baez, far from it, but just explanation as to why I could see baez traded as pondered by sad banana.

But of the 'untouchables' baez, in my best guess, would be the most expendable to the front office.

I think we all agree he's a good player and an upgrade from beef. I'm just not ready to go 5 years for a catcher off a career year with a high babip.

it might never get that high and thus this point is moot. And he could carry on for 5 years (blocking shwarber) because he's a beast. I just don't want to take that chance.

I don't fell like we need to make a huge push right now because i think the competitive window is going to be open for a while.

I'm okay with 2-3 years with some options.

I think this is why we disagree...I'm not even looking at his past offense and BABIP, I'm looking at historical defense, which is simply a lot better than what we have, and it won't diminish nearly as quickly as offense (I think Brett says as much in his article on Martin as well). I don't want to settle for a lower ceiling for what will eventually amount to a 4th rotation starter's difference in salary.

You may not be ready, but I sure as hell am for one of the top catchers in the MLB. And regarding Schwarber, don't pass up on a player because of the potential of one 3-5 years down the road. Logjams are a good thing.

Good discussion here though, it's nice to talk with people that actually know what is going on

No we agree on all that...except the offense part. I don't see that as sustainable.

well that was in a parenthetical because the chances of that happening are about 0. If, and that's a monstrous if, Martin was signed, still premier, and was playing so well you couldn't bench him, you move schwarbs to the OF, and platoon him doutmit style behind the plate.

5 years though...sheesh. Getting greedy.

And i'll happily admit that i'm terrified of this due to mcccann, and that might not be fair, martin stays in the same division unlike mccann, it's chicago, not NY, and mccann could certainly turn it around and even started doing so this year. But I thought that deal was stupid then, so i think matching it now for martin is also stupid. But maybe it doesn't get that high. Remember, my problem is with the time/value, not the players talents (albeit i don't think this year is what you can expect form martin going forward).

Agree. I said that earlier.

I take that chance at catcher. That's literally the only position I do this though. Any other position, and I tell him to kick rocks.

I'm not actually. I think the signing of MCann was a dumb move just to play to the fans of the Yankees. I was never high on MCann to begin with.

Let's talk bullpen

Neil Ramirez is a stud and should be the centerpiece building block of that unit.

I'm not totally sold on rondon and strop having huge roles.

Now, two guys we acquired during the season, Felix dubront and Dan Strailey, seem like they could be bullpen candidates to me. Strailey was a K King in the MiLB (though it didn't translate to the MLB), and Dubront has proven at times to be dominant and at other times erratic. I don't know if we hold on to bosio, but I wonder what he can do with these two, whether it be as starters or relievers?

Vizcaino was bad in his short stint, but he should be fine. Riveiro didn't make it up but we can expect him there in 2015. I wonder if Fujikawa could play a role?

Just watching a team like the Royals and their bullpen makes you realize how important a pen is. Maddon always had pretty decent pens in TB with some reclamation projects. I'm sure he will fool around with some things

Today the Cubs introduce manager Joe Maddon, free agency officially kicks off (official signings), and options are declined/picked up.
