Do you think some people's environment dooms them to fail?

I know back in the early 90s/late 80s urban neighborhoods were at their worst. Really high violence, but maybe that wouldn't have been the case if the government hadn't allowed so many gun and liquor stores to be in these concentrated areas of poverty. Racial profiling was still really prevalent. The question is, do you think there is equal opportunity to succeed in America for everyone today? Does the upper-middle class white kid in the suburbs have the same chance at becoming the CEO of a major corporation as a kid growing up on the south side of Chicago? Or do you think there is still a lot more for impoverished youths to overcome even with the scholarships and grants that are only available to them?

Did you really just post this on the O-T? These mental midgets are going to turn this into a shite show.

I don't think they are "doomed", but the odds are certainly stacked against them.

You really need a message board to answer this question?

I have a feeling that someone just read a Charles Murray book.

so, you would prefer the government telling you where you can/can't put your business?

The upper-middle class just gets their guns an liquor delivered to their home from Amazon.

There's a reason impoverished youths grow up in those situations. I'm a firm believer that dumb parents make dumb kids

This might be more inline with the Poli Board but being in the military, I've met a lot of successful people that came from very crappy places.
A lot of those Soldiers I worked with grew up in situations that should have had them set up for failure from the get go. They did what they had to do. They got an education, figured out a way to pay for it, worked hard, and earned their way in this life.
It's all about understanding what you want, how to get here, and dedicating the time to make it happen.

This is kind of a no shite captain obvious type of question. Unequivocally yes, some people's environment dooms them to fail. There are a multitude of ways that this takes effect.

Just throwing it out there that there are more of these businesses in your "bad" neighborhoods than there are on the "good" side of town.

It's around these businesses that a lot of crime happens. For obvious reasons

There aren't liquor stores in wealthier neighborhoods?

No, but it stacks the deck against them.

A lot of these families have lived in these areas since before the civil rights era. Some don't get the chance to get out and better themselves because they have to get a job right out of high school to help support their family.

Someone's poor circumstances does make it a lot more challenging for them to succeed. However, there are countless examples of people overcoming their environment to be successful so I do not believe anyone is doomed by virtue of their circumstances. Your life is what you make of it and the ones that figure that out can elevate their station in life.
