I wonder if he would have made a ridiculous defensive end. it is hard to imagine an offensive lineman being able to get his hands on Shaq first

People forget what Shaq looked like in college and early on in the NBA.

And the bigger you are, the bigger youre bones are, the more brittle they are. His knees would have been destroyed.

The question is (and I know because this started as a conversation between the OP and I) if Shaq had instead chose to go the NFL route and trained himself accordingly. So by the time he got to the NFL, he would not look like he did as a basketball trained freshman at LSU. He would have bulked up-something his later career showed he had no problem doing.

You do realize how hard it is to bulk up when youre 7'0 at 18 years old? Its not like he wasnt trying to bulk up when he was younger. But he didnt truly bulk up until a few years in the league when he stopped growing and his metabolism slowed down. And you cant guarantee that he would would been bigger / bulked up at a younger age. You gotta remember this was in the late 80s to like 1992 before he went pro. Working out wasnt the same it is now a days with technology, supplements, trainers, etc.

And if he played football instead of basketball, a lot of diff things could have happened, and not all are good things.

Its a hypothetical discussion, but when you say something like "well he would have been training his entire life in football, so ____ would have happened", etc. Too many diff things with too many if, ands, or buts to say 1 would have happened.

I really doubt it.

Leverage would be an issue.

I think Richard Sligh, at 7'0. He was a DT.

The tallest OL was in the 6'8 - 6'9 range.
