lol @ "know my mother teresa" I'm not even religious, but I'm sure as hell not going get up in arms about things like a school in the bible belt thats dominated by a race who is 85%+ Christian having involvement in positive actives that build good morals regardless of faith. You guys are acting like Clemson is requiring it's players to be Christian.

But speaking of mother teresa/aids, why don't you look up some stats on how much money and time christians spent helping muslim countries in africa/asia while abu dhabi was being built. The fact you're bashing Christianity while defending Islam is hilarious.

that's not a fair representation of my perspective. The question posed was whether there were any muslim charities worth mentioning and the answer to that is obviously yes. I would argue there are also a lot of christian charities that do good work.

I view both religions as stone age perspectives on teh world which should not be conflated with morality when they are obviously limited (and in cases where they are moral it is because sources of morality outside of religion have reformed and shaped their teachings).

If you wanted me to argue which one was worse (between christianity and islam) I would say in theory both are the same - they are man made ideas which are bad because they pretend authority they do not have and suppress free thought and development of ideas for reasons of self interest and narcissism rather than idealism.

In practice however islam has been worse (during the 20th and 21st centuries at least). Recently as a whole muslim fundamentalists have more severely restricted the freedom of individuals, advocated for violence as a political means more frequently, and more thoroughly restricted the understanding of the universe by their followers by declaring many scientific teachings to be forms of blasphemy in opposition to religious teaching. But many of our fundamentalists are no better in theory. They would like to restrict the teaching and understanding of many scientific disciplines because they view them as being counter to religion.

If it was Coach Dabo Muhammad Al Akbar this would have been a 300 page thread.

would you be defending him if he was teaching Islam?

Being as it's 100% voluntary and these guys claim to have Christian bliefs, I'd have no problem if he was teaching Islam, so long as it was still voluntary.

You people who are complaining that this is wrong because hes promoting one religion over another would still have a problem if he went to different religious places of worship every week, temple, mosque, church.....

a I'm sure it is "voluntary."

Even if it offends one football player, this is not ok. Its a public university, if dabo wants to do this he needs to go to Baylor, I'm sure Clemson would be happy to swap coaches

I'm pretty sure it is voluntary. I highly doubt Dabo would sit a player or punish a player for not agreeing.

How would people who voluntarily pray together offend someone else? How sensitive are atheists these days?

They say 100% voluntary, but as a person who is atheist and always had a lot of religious people around me, it can be difficult to separate yourself from it.
The coach and the team are doing religious stuff on team time, what is one atheist supposed to do? Not be part of team activities?
If he can't teach good morals without religion then he probably doesn't need to be teaching them. Quit your million dollar salary job and be a preacher, or a coach at a Christian school not funded by taxpayers (at least partially funded)

I am on the fence on this one. If this isn't being forced on the players then I see nothing wrong with it. At the same time, like it has already been said, substitute bible with quoran and a lot of the people currently praising Dabo turn into hypocrites fast.

I'm about as anti-religion as they come. As long as as what they do is 100% voluntary, who cares?

it doesn't matter if it offends zero football players

as a public university Clemson cannot promote religion of any sort.

He's teaching good values that I'm sure he uses to build a team atmosphere on the football field, I don't see the problem.
Maybe he should bring in some Islamic leaders and Jewish leaders to give his players other options? They're all promoting mostly the same values.

For his atheist players, I guess they don't participate, but since they're atheist they shouldn't really care since they think it's all fake, why would they be offended?

Re-read the article and didn't see this:

quote:

The organization suggested Dabo Swinney eliminate the position of team chaplain (currently held by former Tiger James Trapp), cease distributing Bibles, and stop organizing religious activities such as devotionals.

You're right. No chance this should be going on.
