re: Is 2014 football a "rebuilding" year?

who's predicting this?
The West, with bama, LSU, & aTm breaking in new QB's, is going to be wide open & LSU surely can be considered as a contender for the West as well as the overall championship. If they win the West & play in the SEC CG, then that will surely put them in contention for the playoffs.

new inexperienced QB equals a rebuilding year pretty much any way you slice it. we can hope and we can "plug in" players all we want but being in the SEC west and breaking in a new field leader translates into a few losses. maybe if we get lucky like auburn did last year but that doesn't happen that often.

You've bumped your head. The only rebuilding we are doing this year is of TS and out trophy cases. If we have half the improvement on offense we had in Cam's first year, we will be a very tough out for everyone on our schedule.

Offense yes. Defense has questions but it should be where the offense was last year. We will have major QB/WR struggles and a very limited passing game. run game and Oline should be good. Defense should be close to dominant again and if they're not, then we're in for a long season because they'll be expected to carry the weight this year like offense did last year.

It takes an even bigger tard to not realize this may be the best OLine in the SEC, and that alone can put you in Atlanta.

It will be totally different. Likely worse statistically. But it will be one that, when coupled with what I think will be a very good defense, could be adequate to take us where we want to go.

Not sure why you think Welter is the automatic starter. I'm not sure if you have been keeping up with scrimmages/watched the spring game, but Beckwith has consistently performed better than Welter.
But I'm sure that no matter how much evidence is presented to you (veridical or anecdotal), you're going to maintain your pessimistic view of this team.
That's fine. But please languish in your shitty worldview quietly.
so accepting that welter is going to start game 1 because that's what's likely to happen is pessimistic, but putting all your chips on beckwith starting so that if he doesn't you're disappointed is your version of optimistic?

Easier said then done. Will really be up to the QB progression. If we can get any production at all we might be ok. If our QB struggles we'll see a 9-10 man box all year.
ps - QB can run now which is huge

Agreed. If we are able to establish the run as well as I anticipate, we won't need Jennings and/or Harris to set the world on fire. Rather just don't completely frick us and make a few plays.

I like the defense as a whole and most people thought that Minter would be the loss felt the most, and it would have been true had Freak played up to standard.
Secondary
I like Mills way better at safety and Thomas at nickel. White and Robinson with a year of experience will bring the DBU moniker back to LSU. From accounts it seemed that Martin had a lot to deal with and now that he's had some time to, he'll be ready to go.
Linebacker
Depth is experienced and very athletic. I would be astonished if that is not a strong unit for us. I believe we might add more 3-4 to bring another guy in to help Welter in the middle.
Defensive Line
The DE position is fine as we have a breakout star in Hunter on one end, and a reliable run stopper in Rasco on the other. The DT is a wait and see and what better way to see than against Wisky's power run game right off the bat?
Offensive Line
What can I say? We have big hogs up there and they are very experienced (two with 13, one with nearly 20, and one with 24 starts). We'll get a lot of guys in to build depth also.
Tight Ends
Well we know most of them can block, and Gordon and Smith seem like the most reliable hands. I believe Smith will be a top 3 receiver on this LSU squad as a matter of fact. My prediction is 500-700 from this group.
Wide Receivers
Very inexperienced, but highly talented. Aside from Dural, any of them could emerge as the #2. I think Quinn and Dupre will have to be counted on immediately if the guys on campus right now don't step it up. The 2013 WR class might be a lost class with the talent we are aiming to get now. My prediction is 1800-1900 from this group.
Running Backs
I could just say Buga Nation and end it at that, but I think I'll go further. Magee is a decent #2 back and Hilliard will be the guy to grind out the yards after we wear the defense down. Fournette will dominate with no less than 1200 yards if given the carries. Williams will see limited action in mop up games, but should be ready to go if a back goes down. My prediction is between 2950-3050 from this group. Receiving is between 250-400
Quarterback
Well now, we finally get to the good stuff. I'm way more optimistic about this group and think either one of the guys can put up between 2700 and 3000 yards passing this year. We are a downfield passing team which means higher ypa and lower attempts. We have one of the best QB gurus in Cam Cameron and that makes me feel good about all the QBs despite spring practice. After they've got timing down with receivers and worked on accuracy and the offense during summer 7 on 7s and what not, they'll be way more improved in the fall. Cam does not want to limit this offense, and we will throw over 300 times and pass downfield. My prediction is 2800-3000 yards total passing from this group. Rushing is between 200-400.
We have a chance to be undefeated if the offense comes along like I think it will, if it doesn't, we go 10-2. All we really need is one WR to emerge opposite of Dural. I'm not worried about the QBs.

I will only be disappointed if whoever starts doesn't produce. From what I've seen/read/heard, Beckwith looks like he's going to start. At the very least, he's going to share time as the "starter."
Your argument, the entire purpose of this thread, is predicated on the assumption that this team will take a step back on both sides of the ball.
I pointed out that a few of the positions you named as weaknesses will, in fact, improve in the coming year. Yet you continue with your attitude of hopeless negativism.
In summation, you are a miserable turd, and I will suffer this conversation no longer.
Good day, sir.

Last year
You can't build a dynasty that way, or maintain one.
quote:Hard, cold reality is that every year LSU loses a lot of key people prematurely to the NFL, we can expect the year that follows (at least) to be another rebuilding year.
...we found out the hard way that you don't lose your best players and get better. After another year of early defections, the D seems to be in the same situation while the O has question marks everywhere but the line.
