we did sign Champ Bailey. Our #2 CB spot is pretty solidified,

No way you can expect him to come in be an every down CB at his age. His role in this defense will absolutely be nickel/dime and/or in our three safety looks. He is in no way our answer there.

Umm yes... Im pretty sure everyone believes that Bailey is our #2 CB right now. Loomis has even said Bailey will be at CB across from Keenan Lewis. Hell, in 2012 he was a stud and was an every down CB. And with us, he will be the #2 CB so he wont have to guard #1 WRs.

And we have capable backups behind him in White and PRob. White has improved every year in the league, and PRob has a lot of experience.

Is he our longterm answer? No. But, hes a good transitional guy to have at the CB2. And he can give a lot of veteran experience, leadership, and help out the younger guys with the mental part of the game.

Can you find a quote on this?

Because by all accounts anything I've heard from the media has been they expect him to be in on nickel/dime situations with quite a bit of safety mixed in.

quote:

White has improved every year in the league,

White is a very good nickel, but when he was thrust into the starting role opposite Lewis, he struggled mightily. When Lewis went down in the Philly game, Foles was just chucking it for 30 yards a play.

All I'm saying is I feel like we have Lewis and a bunch of nickel/dime guys. If the FO stands pat on that, I can only assume that means they believe having two premier safeties will cover some of those deficiencies up.

I don't remember where the quotes were but he seems right.
There was zero talk from Rob or CSP about moving him to safety.
They said they watched him and contributed most of his 2013 issues to injury and expect to see Bailey more at his 2012 level of play.
And that would put him solidly at the #2 CB position.

Last time Bailey was healthy, he was the #3 cover corner in the NFL. I don't think it's crazy to think he has the potential to be a top 20 corner and play opposite lewis

I think Denver rushed him back. I'm confident he'll be solid with the extra rest

If not, we'll probably rotate him, white, and prob based on matchups and health.

I don't think Robinson is a nickel guy at all. He's best on the outside.

I know he get's killed for 2012, but the whole secondary was pretty crappy in 2012. It was for good reason.

Sharper sat in one of the meetings, and he came away saying it was too complicated. There was multiple checks/options for most individual players on every play. Defense is hard enough to play as it is. You're reacting to what the offense already knows and is executing. If you're having to think too much, you don't really stand a chance. Also, for a scheme like that to work, you'd need to have players thinking/seeing the same thing, being on the same page as they make their individual adjustments. That's why we saw things like gaping holes in the secondary and even players running into each other.

Robinson started getting more snaps towards the end of his rookie year, eventually overtaking Porter. He played pretty well in 2011, where the QB rating was 59.3 when they threw his way.

Robinson (if he heals) is a fine for a #2 cb imo.

Loomis said they intend to only play Champ Bailey at CB. "You always have a need for good players and that's a valuable position."
LINK

"For him (Bailey), it's very clear," Payton said at LSU Pro Day on Wednesday afternoon. "He's coming in to play corner. He's here to compete just like every other player will on our roster. ... I would say when he left (the visit), I know how Mickey (Loomis) felt, Ryan (Pace), myself.

"You could sense that it's real important for him. That's the reason a player like him plays for as long as he has."

Bailey will vie for the Saints' No. 2 cornerback spot in the starting lineup with his chief competition coming from the likes of Corey White and Patrick Robinson.

I agree with BrettRex on this one. Right now we have one legit starting CB. After that we have Champ the Gerry, PRob the Busted and White the Raw. Any one of these guys can become the #2, but it's foolish to think that any of them is a sure thing. I do believe Champ has something left and can/will be that #2, but that is belief and is still a complete unknown. Robinson has 2 years of nothing, but he has shown in the past that he could be a something. White has shown some promise, but he's too erratic to be trusted at this time.

I believe that CB will be addressed in this draft, and I also would be all in favor of bringing in Greer if he's healthy. Even if he winds up being our 5th best CB, he still knows the system and could be a contributor. Worst case scenario is he gets cut. So what?

I think so too. He was a turnover machine and took chances when we had terrible safeties. As a young corner, that is going to lead to some big gains given up.

Now, he can actually afford to take those chances.

...everyone worries so much about the secondary.

The way I see it, we finished #2 in passing D last season starting Lewis/White/Harper/Jenkins/Bush...we're vastly improved and White is better than he gets credit for...can't have pro-bowlers everywhere

Thank you Blues for the link

Bailey is gonna be at the #2CB spot. Like someone said, in 2012 he played the entire season as an every down CB and rated out as a top 10 CB that year. Even if he has lost a step or 2, 85% Champ Bailey is better than most of the CBs in the league.

And we arent going to use him to guard the other teams top WR. Hes gonna be on the #2WR for most teams. He will be fine.

And drake, I agree with you. We were 1 of the best teams against the pass last season. And, overall, we vastly improved in the DBfield.

And most likely will take another CB in the draft.

I think he's just as good inside as outside. His speed let's him keep up with any receiver so he can definitely stick the quicker slot guys.

Where he struggles is getting bodied by the bigger guys.

White is definitely more suited for nickel play than the outside. He excels in the press and short game.

And yeah it's no guarantee Bailey wins the number 2 job, but I bet he gets the inside track on it. If he can be close to 2012 then Robinson would have to return to his 2011 form and White would have to develop a hell of a lot to beat him out.

Bailey's 2012 wasn't far off from Lewis' 2013.

I have no damn metrics to prove sh!t but when healthy and far away from spags i thought PRob ran well with the guys he covered but like harper he never had the timing down to turn around and spot the ball.

He can at times. He's gotten a few picks by looking back to the ball and going up for it. He's inconsistent though.
