2-time pro bowler, solid player from 2006-2010 = a definite negative?

...Harper is so blatantly over-hated around here, it seems. Is it the Alabama thing?

Its def been an exciting off season so far.

We "cut the fat" so to speak with certain players. And for the most part we needed to do that.

Kept Graham. For 1 more year at least but Im confident a deal will be done. And kept Strief.

Went out and made the biggest FA signing since we got Brees, in getting 1 of the top S and defensive playmakers in the game in Byrd. And then made another very good signing in Champ Bailey. Hes a veteran, 1 of the best CBs to ever play the game, and versatile. And he will be our #2 CB.

Defensively, we have improved. Offensive side of the ball, we kept our top target and we will get another playmaker at WR in the draft.

If we just have a solid draft and address our needs, it will be a great offseason. If we have a great draft (or just draft Jordan Matthews ) it will be a grand slam off season. If everyone of our draft picks are crappy, which I doubt... hey we still got Byrd.

Yeah Harper had his obvious limitation, but I put blame on the coaches(seriously Gregg, you put Harper one on one with Vernon Davis to win or lose the game?!?) as much as him in that aspect.

He actually played up to his potential this year and was probably one of his best years. Ryan knew how to use him and put him in a position to succeed more often than not.

I think the 06 offseason edges it out, but I agree that this one has been surprising and really way better than we could have anticipated.

Words cannot express how excited I already am. And the draft hasn't even happened yet!

Things have gone better than I imagined was possible. For a definitive evaluation of the offseason we will have to wait at least 1 year though and possibly a few more to see how draft picks pan out.

Harper was fine for the time he came in the league. The game just changed rapidly to where a box safety become antiquated. It's hard to get by with a safety with that kind of coverage limitations unless you got a true centerfielder behind him, which we never had, until now.

...depends on the draft.

2006 was awesome....brought in Brees, and dat draft:

Reggie Bush Roman Harper Jahri Evans Rob Ninkovich Zach Strief Marques Colston

This.

In hindsight this offseason is probably better, but in terms of pure excitement, nothing will probably ever touch Bush and Brees in 2006.

He was pretty damn good. After 06-07', we were saying the samethings we are saying about Vaccaro this year.

We all thought he was good after 06-07, but no one thought he was KV good

He only played in 5 games

I agree, but a few guys still use a box safety and Ryan is one of them(along with GW and Rex).

You will see Vaccaro in the box on most of the snaps, only he can also cover extremely well.

When healthy Harper was in the box and Jenkins and Vaccaro were switching between deep safety and nickel.

Right. I remember thinking we actually got a good safety for once, but I never had pro bowl aspirations for him like I do for Vaccaro.

Surprisingly though, Harper actually made a couple.

I'm definitely looking forward to the draft.

a big surprise signing Byrd. Upgraded at safety tremendously.

because this is such a deep class at WR, I feel like we'll get one that we will be happy with.

I wasn't looking forward to the draft the last few years because of how Goodell screwed us. Even last year I wasn't that into it. No 2nd round pick? Yeah, to hell with that. Just wasn't in the same spirit.

but this year we've just got a lot more positive things happening. I wish they hadn't moved the draft back like they did oh well, the schedule is coming out soon at least.

His 07 season was better than Vaccaros rookie year. Everyone was really high on him.

8 years later and it's prob hard to remember.

No it wasn't, but you think KV is overrated so...

I liked Harper too. KV immediately stood out. He would fly across the field to save a touchdown. Guy shined on a good defense

I'm probably one of the few that's never been down on him(minus the Spags year, but I was just down on the D in general outside of Jordan so I throw that year out).

I was hoping(but not expecting) he would take a pay cut again to stay, but that doesn't normal happen once, much less two years in a row.
