TCU CB Jason Verrett: "“I Shut Down…Odell Beckham…”

Got this gem off of PFT (from earlier this morning). I know he's a confident guy and all, but numbers don't lie (even if you do, Jason):
LSU v TCU Game Stats (Players):
Jason Verrett
quote:
“...I mean I shut down a lot of elite receivers,” Verrett said. “You know Odell Beckham, Kenny Stills, Terrance Williams, Eric Ward.
LSU v TCU Game Stats (Players):
quote:
O Beckham 5 rec, 118 yds

He has a different definition of shut down than most people, apparently.

I know defense backs supposed to have a short memory but damn.

did you actually look up to see how many of these catches came against Verrett? Or did you just look at his stats from the box score and quote that?

Probably just looked at stats. Either way. You should never say you "shutdown" a receiver who went for over 100 yards on your team.

He had like 1 rec for like 16 yards against him, if I recall correctly.

False.
He's talking about himself - not TCU as a team. If Verrett held OBJ to 1 catch for 12 yards and they were matched up against each other 7-10 times, then that's shutting him down.

Football is a team sport therefore he didn't shut him down. Besides it was the first game of the season the wideouts and Mett weren't even clicking like midseason. Not to mention they were bracketing Beckham Verrett had safety help the whole time. Anyways 5 rec 118

Jarvis had 8 for 109 and a TD that game too
We run 2 Wrs tops 100000% of the time so I have a hard time believing all of this happened on someone else's watch.

Oh, I do too. But my point is that you can't just look at the stats on the box score as if it's indicative of how Verrett did against OBJ or Landry.

You also can't say you shut down anyone when two players went for over 100 yards and you lost.

Point is, he shouldn't be running his mouth about "shutting him down" when the guy went for over 100 yards. He may have shut him down for a few plays. But but if he did "shut him down", he clearly didn't do it for an entire game. And that's what matters.
