I get a letter about every two to three years claiming unreported income. It has 6 pages of how I can pay them complete with penalties and interest, and one small area to check if you disagree. I disagree and send them the documentation which they already have.
In about 18 mos, if I'm lucky, I get a letter with a one sentence response. "We've closed your tax year 2011 without any further tax liability."
And in conclusion, my hard drive crashed.

Just got off the phone with them. They need "additional documentation" because my reply to them did not "explicitly state" that the $33,020.00 in qualified tuition and related expenses was paid to the University in 2012.
You would think these dolts would realize that she wouldn't have still been enrolled in 2013 if she didn't pay $33k in tuition for 2012.

I was also floored when I asked if she had the information available that I had sent via certified mail in April. She indicated that they do not have the technology to scan documentation into a taxpayer's file that is sent via mail so she did not have that info available.
I really wanted to reply that doesn't surprise me since y'all can't even hold onto a few emails.

Government employees are arrogant in their power.

You're a government employee?

I'm an accountant for the state. I don't do individual taxes though, only sales and excise.

Yup.
Why do you thiuk they push e-filing so much? E-filing does not mean a scan of your 1040 is sent to an IRS computer. E-file means a bunch of computer code is sent to the IRS computers, and inherent in that computer code is all the information in your tax return.

I am dealing with this same issue from 2010 for tuition they say I didn't pay. It is unbelievable the incompetence of these morons.

Fwiw, I seriously doubt an IRS worker even saw your return. There was probably a minor error, or it was deemed to be enough money that a verification was needed by a computer.

Tell them you sent the email directly to Lois Lerner
with all the details

Of all the things that could get scrutinized on a tax return, it's hard to believe they are challenging education credits. It's one thing if an institution never sent the taxpayer a 1098-t and that person went ahead and claimed 5,000 in higher learning expenses to which the IRS would then need to see proof of payments.
The credits for education in the last few years have increased a good bit so this may be a reason for the sudden scrutinization.

They also manage to lose a few of those.
