I watched my brother catch one pushing 18" in a gravel pit in South LA years ago.
i swear that dude would be a talented outdoorsman if he ever put his mind to it. not that the sac au lait was anything more than a die-roll between the three of us.
i think i drove him off of fishing when i broke that shitty old paddle over his back. we were paddling in opposite directions in the same boat; him towards the sac au lait spot and me towards the bank for bass. lol. then he threw his paddle across the pond to spite me & i had to go get it by paddling with the net.

Two species.
A_bear's pic is a good example of white crappie on top, black on bottom. But they're both sac a lait .

Never went crappie fishing per se, but have caught several while bass fishing.
Two largest were 2 lb 2 oz on a 7" culprit and the other was a 3lb 4 oz on a white buzzbait at dusk.
Kinda thought about mounting the larger one but backed out.
He ate mighty fine though.

If in LA, a 3lb 4 oz crappie would be a top 10 state record fish...at least per the current wildlife & fisheries list.

And here is a general length/weight chart I found. Based on my own data, it seems to be reasonably accurate:

I didn't know there were different species. I should thaw him out and weigh him. I wonder if he would place on that list.
ETA: nevermind, judging by that chart it will only be 1.4 pounds.

I usually catch at least one every year that's 14-15 inches on a crank bait one one particular point on one particular lake in La.

My uncle fishes with Richard Brooke on that list a lot. They've been slaying them in Poverty Point this year on a spider rig...pretty much everything is 2+ lbs.

Never have I ever measured a sacalait
Heaviest was just over 1 lb though

In Alabama's Lake Weiss a 3 lber rarely gets a second glance
Posted on 3/30/14 at 8:43 pm to AUTimbo
Damn that's nuts...just checked the AL state record listing. State record crappie is at 4.9 lbs
Posted on 3/30/14 at 8:48 pm to jordan21210
Supposedly there have been 5 lb plus taken in that lake but never officially registered.
We stopped for breakfast before the tourney at a lakeside eatery and they had several 4 lb plus mounted in a glass case.
Unreal lake for crappie. So-so for bass.
