My friend told his wife that if someone would ever walk up to her vehicle and put a gun to her she should hold her pistol (9mm) to the door where the person couldn't see and shoot through the door to kill the person outside the vehicle. Does this seem logical? I don't know too much about pistols and I'm a horrible shot with a one but to me that sounds like a bad idea. Seems like the bullet wouldn't have any stopping power after going through the door panel then through the metal then the clothes. What are y'all thoughts on this?

It depends on alot of things, mainly bullet type and if the window is rolled down or not IMO. I'd try it if I had to, but I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't work very well. There's lots of guts in a car door and there are places where nothing but a piece of plastic and .030 sheet metal are between you and outside. Far too many variables to say.

If that happened to me, I wouldn't even grab my gun, give them wallet phone keys or whatever and let em be on there way.

Nothing I own is worth dying over

If I felt I need to shoot thru the door I'd unload that SOB.

I've seen some videos on YouTube where they set up some car doors in front of water jugs. For the most part bullets go right through unless they hit a cross member.

With that being said:

I would not advise this.

This was actually my 8th grade science fair project. I took a 9mm, .40 and .45 and shot each one at an old car door from different distances and then shot each one at a windshield at different angles. I forget exactly which angle it was, but passed a certain angle the 9mm simply deflected off the windshield. I don't remember much about what happened with the car door except that most didn't make it through, but that was from a distance. However, I took the car door apart after (this was an older car door) and there was a ton of metal inside that would easily stop a bullet.

It depends on where it goes through the door. If it hits the frame of window mechanism then it probably won't make it through. If it just hits the door skin, it will barely slow down or distort. If she shoots the window, it will likely make a mess with glass going everywhere since that is safety class and it is designed to break into a zillion pieces at impact.

I recently did some training where we shot through a car windshield from inside the car using a .40 and it had no effect what so ever. I was surprised. It shot straight and true.

No.

Why hold the gun where he can't see it ?

1. He might decide to run away when//if he sees the gun.

2. She'll get better hits by raising the gun to eye level and pulling the trigger.

3. As Clint Smith says -- either drive, or shoot. I think driving away, if feasible, is option # 1 in the scenario you posed.

If she's being blocked from entering her car (as was posed as a different scenario), and if she can articulate why she was reasonably in fear of death or great bodily harm, then a gun would be a good tool to have.
